Fighting the late-night bright light could reduce risk of diabetes

Avoiding bright light at night could be a simple way to reduce your risk of diabetes, a study shows.

The study reveals the compelling relationship between exposure to light and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

"We found that exposure to brighter light at night was associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes," says Associate Professor Andrew Phillips.

In the large modeling study, the research team investigated whether personal light exposure patterns predicted the risk of diabetes using data from approximately 85,000 people and around 13 million hours of light sensor data.

The participants—who did not have type 2 diabetes—wore devices on their wrist for one week to track their light levels throughout the day and night.

They were then tracked over the following nine years to observe whether they went on to develop type 2 diabetes.

"Light exposure at night can disrupt our circadian rhythms, leading to changes in insulin secretion and glucose metabolism," he says.

"Changes in insulin secretion and glucose metabolism caused by disrupted circadian rhythms affect the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels, which can ultimately lead to the development of type 2 diabetes."

Having more exposure to light at night (between 12:30am and 6:00am) was linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and this was true regardless of how much light people were exposed to during the day.

The research accounted for other factors associated with type 2 diabetes, such as lifestyle habits, sleep patterns, shift work, diet, and mental health.

"The results showed that exposure to brighter light at night is associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes, with a dose-dependent relationship between light exposure and risk," says Associate Professor Phillips.

The risk of diabetes goes up as we are around ambient or device light at night, and it accrues for what our eyes can see as even subtle light, through our eyelids.

Consider using an eye mask, black out curtains, etc. Also, reduce brightness of devices and lights and turn them all off, prior to sleep.

Who believes this crap? That light impacts blood sugar? Not sugar intake, but light.

Smells like bullcrap to me.

Or, you can resolve your chromium, vanadium, and potassium deficiencies and avoid it altogether, and/or heal yourself from it.

The risk of diabetes goes up as we are around ambient or device light at night,

You could draw that conclusion if they had done an experiment. But they didn't.

What they found was some people who were exposed to light in the middle of the night developed diabetes. They night have been night workers. They might have been party people who stay up at night. They might have been people with insomnia.

If anyone wants to say that light exposure causes an increased risk of diabetes and very different kind of study needs to be done.

I’m with you.

My Dad didn’t have bright lights ever, but he was very, very overweight. Which turned in to type 2 diabetes. He didn’t over eat as much as he couldn’t exercise because of a knee injury. His weight exacerbated that problem, and I’m sure that whatever sugar he did eat didn’t help.

Bright lights, my ass. He was in bed by 9 pm every night and woke up at 5 am. There were no computers or devices for him back then.

This must be Anthony Fauci’s kind of science.

Be like a Mogwai and don’t expose yourself to “bright light.”
