In an Olympic tuneup, Ukraine’s top high jumper breaks the 37-year-old world record

PARIS (AP) — Ukraine’s best high jumper captured a world record on Sunday to go with her world championship, and now she has a good reason to think she might bring home an Olympic gold medal to her war-torn country.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh erased a mark that had stood for 37 years at a Diamond League meet in Paris, jumping 2.10 meters (6.88 feet) in one of the last big tuneups leading into the Olympics.

The previous record of 2.09 was set by Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova in Rome in 1987.

“Coming into this competition, I had feelings that I could jump 2.07 meters and maybe 2.10 meters,” Mahuchikh said. “Finally I signed Ukraine to the history of world athletics.”

The 22-year-old Mahuchikh and world indoor champion Nicola Olyaslagers both cleared 2.01 meters on their second attempt. After Olyslagers failed three times at 2.03, Mahuchikh cleared that height to secure victory.

She then cleared 2.07 meters to set a Ukrainian record and had the bar raised to 2.10, which she cleared on her first try.

Mahuchikh left her hometown of Dnipro shortly after the war with Russia began. Like virtually all elite athletes in her country, she has been training in foreign countries while keeping tabs on the war back home. She has been outspoken about the role Ukrainian sports can play to give signs of hope to those fighting for Ukraine’s survival.

Per wiki, there were two Eleanors in the 1974 movie, one for beauty scenes, one to wreck. The 2000 movie had 11 or 12...3 fully functional, the others just shells. A 1971 Chevy Chevelle SS convertible showed up on Craigslist this weekend...great shape, really quite nice...$12,500. Seller claimed it was “all original”. Ancient Chevelles have been butchered and remade into all sorts of SS clones, so I’d have to be very careful. In the CL pictures, much of it looked correct. After researching “how to spot a fake Chevy Chevelle SS”, and comparing pictures, I think it’s a fake. The CL car’s dashboard turn signal lights have a silver ring around the lights. Original ‘71s had plain black plastic. Man you have to be careful. Still...I may go look at it.

For men it is Javier Sotomayor from Cuba who is the current world record holder with a jump of 8 ft 1⁄4 set in 1993.

I will never understand why he took Reacher, a drifter who is supposed to blow into town, kill everyone who has it coming, and blow out of town, a wife to nag him and argue with him and a teenage daughter to stymie him with rebellion in the second one. Terrible choice.

Edge of Tomorrow I saw on a hotel TV - when it started “looping” I was “WHAT is going on?” - then eventually I stuck it out long enough to get it.

The title song at the end is especially annoying but at least now I understand where they were going with the movie.

I won’t spoil it - but yeah, it was typical of a Tom Cruise movie with the theme - I might still own the movie if I could find it for $5 which I’m sure I will be able to.

One hotel TV channel ran that movie (and others) over and over and over and over. They must have decided to squeeze every penny and got basically unlimited showings for a period of time.
