Palm Springs Hits Record High Temperature of 124 Degrees Fahrenheit
Breitbart ^ | 07/07/2024 | Joel B Pollack

The city of Palm Springs, California, recorded a high temperature of 124 degrees Fahrenheit (51 degrees Celsius) on Friday, breaking the record of 123 degrees, which was last reached in 2021.

The high temperatures are the result of a heat wave that has gripped much of the state, away from the coastline.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

Palm Springs broke an all-time daily temperature record Friday when the official weather station at the airport registered a high of 124 degrees. This breaks the previous record of 123 degrees, which was most recently tied in June 2021.

The temperature is one of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in California outside Death Valley.

They've registered the temperature at the airport? 🙄

Probably jet exhaust aimed at the thermometer :-)

I remember when record highs and lows were sort of neat and just part of the normal cycle of weather events. Now they are portrayed as omens of doom.

Pavement wall to wall.

Go under a tree....on grass....and a light breeze...and it's 20 degrees cooler.

And is this 124 degree "indexed"...

True enough, because they are pushing global warming. Every weather event is said to be evidence of global warming.

All official temperatures are taken at the NWS station at airport’s has been that way for nearly a century.

Good explanation why. METAR is vital to safe flying. Having a full set away from shade, trees and water also evens out the peaks and valleys at night water holds heat and skews the air density numbers vital for weight and lift calculations.

More concrete and asphalt that is laid. The more the temperature will go up.

FR HQ recorded 112 deg. yesterday (15% humidity). Record for the day, but not for the week...hit 115 deg. on July 8th. 1905.

Air temperature is defined as not being in shade or under cover. There is a reason air temp ,pressure ,humidity is measured on airport’s first is critical to flight mass and lift calculations and second the airport is a wide open space with no trees nor cover to mess up the air readings. The NWS sensor stack is always away from black top and concrete over grass and away from buildings that could block airflow or radiate heat. Accurate real air temp , humidity and pressure are absolutely critical to flight OPS. One wrong calculation and people die when the plane is over mass for the indicated air density conditions. Everything is not a conspiracy airport data has been the official weather data for a region for nearly 100 years precisely because of the critical need for actuate data for aircraft OPS.

Palm Springs has hot summers. It is said that the intersection of Ramón Rd. and Palm Canyon Dr. in Palm Springs is the hottest intersection in the world.

Airport’s are used as the official weather data for a region because of the open spaces of the airport, lack of trees and lack of dense buildings wish block airflow and also radiate heat from their sun baked walls. The city was likely hotter due to the urban heat island effect. While it might seem that the runways and taxi aprons would be a heat island the total land area covered by improved surfaces the official term for them vs grass and vegetation or unimproved surfaces is such that an airport is less of a heat island than the typical urban scape. Accurate temps for aircraft operations is why there is always a NWS sensor stack on site at every major airport. Air density is a function of temperature, humidity and pressure. Accurate data is critical for 100 tonne objects to get airborne the FAA a s NWS doesn’t mess around with that data peoples lives depend on it. This is why official weather data for a region from the airport’s and has been that way for most of the 20th century and into the 21st. The first thing us pilots lock at before we fuel and weight calc is METAR data. Get it wrong and your dead.

MOST temps are actually recorded at airports...Do NOT know why.

Temp reporting stations get moved tho...KFAT (Fresno Air Terminal) had the NWS office about a half mile off the airport property and that was the “official” Fresno airport temp reporting station for decades...due to budget constraints about 15 years ago the official CA Central Valley NWS office was moved to Hanford, CA and a new NWS temp station was erected on the airport property....so minor variations in temp history are to be expected (plus the temp station build standards/location standards/tech has changed over the last 100 years).

It took about two seconds for Gavin Newsom to come out and blame “climate change” - and that we need to “further crack down on carbon emissions” and raise taxes to do so (gas tax in California just went up again on July 1st, never enough for these bastards).

Love my state, hate its government.

In the south bay area where we live, yesterday was 104. About 30 miles away on the coast, Santa cruz/Monterey bay, it was low 60’s. A 40 degree difference within 30 miles! Amazing!
