Is Sunscreen Useless?
EuroWeekly News ^ | 06 Jul 2024 | Anna Akopyan

Swedish researchers at the Umeå University argue that there´s not enough evidence proving benefits of sunscreens.

One of the most increasing forms of cancer in Sweden, skin cancer is linked to sun exposure and many believe in the use of sunscreens for guaranteed protection.

According to the Radiation Safety Authority, applying sunscreen provides protection from the sun, yet researchers at the Umeå University are doubting the results. “The scientific support that sunscreen protects against skin cancer is weak. Therefore, one should be careful in recommending it as a protection,” said Bengt Järvholm, a senior physician and professor at Umeå.

He linked his doubt to the increase in skin cancer in Sweden, despite the rising use of sunscreen. “It cannot be explained by an increased frequency of reporting to the cancer registry as the mortality rate in malignant melanoma is also increasing,” stated Järvholm.

The risks associated with using sunscreen are not known and have not been scientifically established. “Some substances pass through the skin, which can be measured by studying the presence of the substances or their breakdown products in the urine. The risks of this are not fully known,” said Järvholm.

I don’t know if prevents skin cancer, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it can protest against sun burns

So many questions. Was the sunscreen applied properly? Was the sunscreen re-applied after a period of time? When did the increase of skin cancers occur, in the past three years? (yes, I went there!)

I’ve got very fair skin. Sunscreen works for me. Covering up works too!

Maybe it's just that if you are Swedish no amount of sunscreen is enough?

I think Vit D levels affect cancer levels more than under use of sun screen.

But do you get some sun exposure without sunscreen, to get nutrients?

Notice it didn’t say anything about sunburn. It does protect against burn but funny how increase in sunscreen goes with increasing in skin cancer. No one is saying this. Use a zinc oxide and tallow mixture or get a protective tan over time and also cover up. But we do need sun exposure and no cancer causing chemicals being absorbed by our skin

I don’t know if prevents skin cancer, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it can [protect] against sun burns

That gets people to stay out in the sun longer than they normally would. If the sunscreen doesn’t protect against skin cancer in addition to sunburn, staying out in the sun longer is a bad thing.

Exaxtly. And ever since CDC et al started recommending sun screen and mothers started compulsivly slathering their children with it (without supplementing with Vitamin D to compensate since “supplements are useless and a waste of money”) the average age of colon cancer diagnosises has continuously dropped.

Swedish researchers at the Umeå University argue that there´s not enough evidence proving benefits of sunscreens.

That has been controversy for decades.

I believe that unless a person fully immerses themselves in a tank of sunscreen, they get a false sense of security because without the sense of burning, they stay out longer not realizing portions of unprotected scalp, eyelids, etc are getting blasted and it only takes one cell to mutate into a malignancy.

Full body immersing in a tank one time is not enough, periodic re-immersions are needed.

Sunshine help prevent suicide as well, considering gray and rainy Seattle is the nation’s suicide capitol or so I heard.

I’ve switched to zinc oxide. Baby Coppertone for my face. Doesn’t sting my eyes, does the best job keeping down the freckles, my own exposure meter.

Does it get in through the skin, nanoparticles? I don’t know.

Family history skin cancer, I take my chances with the sunscreen.

I remember the Coppertone girls on billboards when I was a kid in the 70s. Are you saying those girls were lying to me? If they were it’s okay, because they can do whatever they want. :-)

Pretty sure that this is not the case.

My mom died way too young due to skin cancer probably triggered by too much sun tanning back when it was fashionable.

Spend a lot of time outdoors and have used sun screen religiously since then.

According to my dermatologist it's made a huge difference preventing skin damage over the years.

Never use it. I don’t like the idea of spreading chemicals all over my body when your skin absorbs EVERYTHING you put on it. Don’t wear makeup, have never dyed my hair and the last time I permed it was in the 80’s. I firmly believe one of the reasons women experience so much hair loss as they get older is because they put so many chemicals on it over the years changing the color. I go with what God gave me, and my husband loves it.
