Comet observers are all hoping for big things from comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) in autumn 2024.
When it was discovered, it was hailed as a potential ‘comet of the century’ and calculations suggested it might become as bright as mag. -4!
It’s now thought that at best A3 will reach mag. +0.4, a lot fainter but still much brighter than the last really bright comet, C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE), which delighted sky-watchers in summer 2020.

Pinging MtnClimber...
Thanks for the ping.
I’m still licking my wounds of disappointment over Haley’s Comet in the mid-80’s. I’m afraid to get excited over this.
Quotes. Father Brennan :
When the Jews return to Zion /
And a comet rips the sky /
And the Holy Roman Empire rises, /
Then You and I must die. /
From the eternal sea he rises, /
Creating armies on either shore, /
Turning man against his brother /
‘Til man exists no more.
Well, it was great fiction from “The Omen” - made for some dramatic scenes (other dialogue) in the first 3 movies (the 3rd one is not family-friendly FWIW - then again, those movies are definitely not for children)
“Omen II” had one of the most captivating openings I’ve seen
Hale-Bopp was pretty impressive.
That and Kahoutek.....................
WOW, something to really look forward to! I saw NEOWISE from my light-polluted, tree-covered neighborhood in my 15x70 binoculars, and was frustrated. I’ll be watching for this one, and will be sure to get to a darker area to set up a scope. Thanks for posting!
Did you get to see Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake? They were magnificent!
The Omen 2006 with Liev Schreiber was good, also. The Omen 2024 I have not seen yet. Another remake….
Sam Neill was in Omen III as Damien Thorne.
The astronomers scene at the observatory was very well done but COMPLETELY unBiblical - made for a good movie
Omen II was Bugenhagen (wow, I think I actually spelled it correctly!) heading to the ruins in a Jeep CJ-5 or CJ-7 shooing everybody out of the way to see the wall. Pure fiction, of course. Not Biblical.
The music really set you on edge.

[The Omen 2006 with Liev Schreiber was good]
I have not been able to see that one yet
Thanks for setting me straight. Funny I don’t remember Omen II. I will have to search it out. Thanks.
It may be the best of the first 3
During the opening scene Bugenhagen says he is quoting from the Book of Revelation but he’s actually quoting the Apostle Paul from 2nd Thessalonians 2:8 KJV:
2 Thessalonians 2:8
King James Version
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed,
whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth,
and shall destroy with the Brightness of His Coming:

There’s also another error when Damien is reading from his Bible as instructed by his sergeant (Lance Henriksen) - Damien is ostensibly reading from the Book of Revelation but also quotes from Daniel 8 (if memory serves) - “...and by peace shall destroy many...”)
One of its smaller friends (1440” dia) could impact on Oct 4th, but observations are spotty - orbit cannot be accurately computed. 4% chance of hit - if it hits land, the fire ball will be 100 miles wide, creating firestorm from which on one will leave alive.
Haley’s Comet in 86 was a great comet. I watched it for more than 2 years as it approached and left. It was the 4th brightest comet easily visible in the Northern Hemisphere since the 70s. It was NOT like Comet West, Hyakutake, or Hale Bopp, but, you can’t have everything.
There hasn’t been anything like Comet West is a LONG time.
From my location, Halley’s was only visible with unaided eyes very near the horizon. It was like a faint, smudged star.
I was away from the city light pollution and it was still barely visible.
