A legendary surfer and actor known for his role in “Pirates Of The Caribbean” was killed in a shark attack in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday.

Honolulu’s emergency services were unable to save Tamayo Perry, 49, after he was attacked by a shark while surfing off the island of Oahu at around 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the BBC. Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for Honolulu Ocean Safety and for The Honolulu Medical Services Office, confirmed Perry’s death in a press statement after paramedics used jet skis to bring him back to shore.

Kurt Lager, acting Chief of the Ocean Safety Department, said in the press statement that Perry, who was a local lifeguard, was “loved by all. He’s well-known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known world-wide.”

Besides his fame as a surfer, Perry was also known for his acting, starring in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and appearing in “Lost,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Blue Crush” and “Charlie’s Angels 2,” the BBC reported.

Chief Lager noted that “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi followed Lager’s words by stating Perry’s death was “a tragic loss” and that he “was a legendary waterman and highly respected, [he] grew up right over here, and just a great member of our ocean safety team…You get a call like this on a Sunday afternoon and it’s just hard to imagine.”

The mayor also asked that Perry’s family be given privacy to cope with their loss.

Perry, who had been surfing professionally for over 10 years, described himself on the Oahu Surfing Experience website as a “small time island boy” who “can bang it out with the world’s best.”

“I’ve never heard of a gun saving a surfer that’s being attacked.”

A gun saved Chief Brody’s life.

Lol! Where was that at, bizzarro world? Those dudes appear to be shooting at something that’s not in the water.

I guess I should have been more defintive: attacked by sharks.

We all do things everyday, that to a lesser or greater extent endanger our lives. We’re all going to die. Prayers for his family!

"That said, I’ve never heard of a gun saving a surfer that’s being attacked."

A powerhead is a specialized firearm used underwater that is fired when in direct contact with the target. Powerheads are often used for spear fishing and against sharks or alligators for sport, defense, or to kill nuisance animals.

Where was that at, bizzarro world?

“Skeet Surfing” is the opening title to the movie Top Secret!

He wasn’t surfing. And he had a fairly stable shooting position. And that was a movie, where a pressure tank holding air exploded simply because it was punctured.

I had an oxy regulator fail on my torch, 1200 psi only blew out a hole in the hose.

Oh, ok. I would want a really big surf board. One that could stand at least 10 surfers.

More people swim in the ocean than go hiking or however you would encounter a bear so shark attacks are more effective as fear porn for media outlets.

He also went to same high school as Obama at about the same time. Said the "choom gang" stuff - all true. Obama was known as a good basketball player - and a total pothead.

So that's why we didn't hear too much about young Obama from the media.

“Obama was known as a good basketball player”

There was a huge controversy at the time about whether or not Obama even attended that school (Punahou).

Sharks just look at all those certifications and laugh at you. Imagine its a Bass Pro event. The better you can modulate through the water, the more of a challenge it is for them. Its a food chain thing and you’re never gonna win this one.

I have never understood the idea that we must protect the shark population in the oceans. They have been here for millions of years, and will remain the top of the food chain in the ocean for millions of years. Fewer sharks means more fish for fishermen, and fewer attacks on humans. More shark fin soup means fewer shark attacks on humans. That must be a good thing.
