FWC investigates incident in Lake Monroe

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was seriously injured after being bitten by an alligator early Sunday in Lake Monroe in Seminole County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officers.

The incident happened just before 2 a.m.

According to FWC, the man was swimming in Lake Monroe when the attack happened. He had serious injuries, but the extent of the injuries was not released.

The FWC recommends the following to help prevent any interactions with gators:

Keep a safe distance if you see an alligator. If someone is concerned about an alligator, they should call FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286), and we will dispatch a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation. Keep pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge. Pets often resemble alligators’ natural prey. Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours and without your pet. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Never feed an alligator. It’s illegal and dangerous. When fed, alligators can lose their natural wariness and instead learn to associate people with the availability of food. This can lead to an alligator becoming a nuisance and needing to be removed from the wild. FWC researchers estimated there were 1,274 alligators in Lake Monroe in 2023.

No other information, including the man’s age, has been released.

I have a floating dock on the St. Lucie River, sometimes I have to negotiate with them to get to the boat. We all get along fine, mostly.

Keep a safe distance if you see an alligator.

It's the one you don't see that'll get you. I was fishing a park pond on Hilton Head Island several years ago and had hooked a small bass. As I slid it out of the water onto the bank an unseen gator exploded from the shallows and gulped it down. Left me scrambling to get out of the way!

I was assigned to an Air Force Base in Louisiana during the mid 80s. Being a city kid from the north, I knew nothing about alligators.

My friends and I were sitting around bored on a Saturday so we decided to check out the north side of the base where there was a lake and a recreational area. I grabbed a Polaroid one-step camera. We saw a gator in the lake, but I couldn’t get a good shot. That’s when I had the brilliant idea to run to the shoppette and purchase lunch meat.

About ten minutes later, we lured the critter out of the water with bologna slices on a stick.

On the following Monday, I showed the photos to coworkers. One Cajun calmly explained to me why my actions were extremely stupid.
