FWC investigates incident in Lake Monroe
SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was seriously injured after being bitten by an alligator early Sunday in Lake Monroe in Seminole County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officers.
The incident happened just before 2 a.m.
According to FWC, the man was swimming in Lake Monroe when the attack happened. He had serious injuries, but the extent of the injuries was not released.
The FWC recommends the following to help prevent any interactions with gators:
Keep a safe distance if you see an alligator. If someone is concerned about an alligator, they should call FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286), and we will dispatch a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation. Keep pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge. Pets often resemble alligators’ natural prey. Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours and without your pet. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Never feed an alligator. It’s illegal and dangerous. When fed, alligators can lose their natural wariness and instead learn to associate people with the availability of food. This can lead to an alligator becoming a nuisance and needing to be removed from the wild. FWC researchers estimated there were 1,274 alligators in Lake Monroe in 2023.
No other information, including the man’s age, has been released.
How to test for alligators in Florida:
Stick your hand in the water
if it is wet, there is probably an alligator
If it is bitten off
there is a big alligator
All of FL is lousy with gators but Seminole County is ground zero.
Here’s how you can tell if there are gators in a Florida lake. Walk to the edge and put your hand in the water. If it comes out wet there’s gators in the lake. 😆
How could the gene pool be "cleansed" if he's still alive?
Poor doggy..................Happened here a few times......
Around here it’s coyotes that might go after people’s pets. Don’t need a license to shoot them here. If there’s one in your yard, you’re allowed to get it.
We also have coyotes!....................
Fortunately our bird bath is too high off the ground for them. ..but not for the SNAKES.
No coyotes, but bobcats fill the role where I live.
We have those, too!...............
How far north do they live?
Hamburg NY, bring Albert 🐊 home
Have you ever been to Jack Willie’s in Oldsmar? There’s one that hangs out in the water there and it’s salt water (or brackish).
Yep we got gators everywhere in Florida
I never worried about them when I used to water ski when I was a teenager.
Ask yourself these questions:
* Are you in Florida
* Is there a lake?
If you answered YES to these, then there’s a gator in the lake.
“Ditch, parking lot run-off drain pits, and occasionally swimming pools...............”
Florida alligator test.
1. Cautiously approach the body of water that may/may not contain alligators.
2. Briefly place three or four fingers in the edge of the water.
3. Wiggle your fingers quickly.
4. Are your fingers wet?
5. There is probably an alligator in that body of water.
I like gator meat. I hope you had plenty. It’s not the cheapest meat, and sometimes, it’s strangely fibrous.
Yes.
Jack Wille’s is still there, but that gator got too big.
Don’t know the final deposition of said gator.
5.56mm
