FWC investigates incident in Lake Monroe

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was seriously injured after being bitten by an alligator early Sunday in Lake Monroe in Seminole County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officers.

The incident happened just before 2 a.m.

According to FWC, the man was swimming in Lake Monroe when the attack happened. He had serious injuries, but the extent of the injuries was not released.

The FWC recommends the following to help prevent any interactions with gators:

Keep a safe distance if you see an alligator. If someone is concerned about an alligator, they should call FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286), and we will dispatch a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation. Keep pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge. Pets often resemble alligators’ natural prey. Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours and without your pet. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Never feed an alligator. It’s illegal and dangerous. When fed, alligators can lose their natural wariness and instead learn to associate people with the availability of food. This can lead to an alligator becoming a nuisance and needing to be removed from the wild. FWC researchers estimated there were 1,274 alligators in Lake Monroe in 2023.

No other information, including the man’s age, has been released.

“Bitten” is preferable to “swallowed.”

"Keep a safe distance if you see an alligator." I have/carry an Alexander Arms AR-50 "Beowulf" .50cal w/ 375gr FMJs/HPs, and still don't get near those nasty things, but a ¼-mile distance is even better.

goes swimming at 2am in a Florida lake?.

Since Colorado has more weed, the Florida genius likely involved beer.

I thought the same. I suspect it might have been a “hold my beer” exercise.

If he only bit him and didn’t eat him, I’m guessing the guy didn’t taste all that good.

We saw people kayaking in the dark just hours after we saw a hungry alligator in the canal where we were staying. No thanks.

If a gator comes towards you once you are noisy, that means he wants more food, and he’s not scared of you. I like to keep them at a distance, not jump in the water with them.

Last week, I was just sitting on the edge of the canal quietly enjoying the view across me when I noticed a gator swimming nearby. As soon as he saw me move towards the house, he swam right over to the edge, and then into the boathouse, where there are steps. That was close enough for me. I not only closed the screen porch door, I locked it, too. I’m sure a gator’s tail would tear down a screen easily, but then there was a whole house to retreat into if I had needed.

PSA for Florida. Touch your finger to the water. If it is wet, there is probably a gator in it.
