Diversity & Inclusivity

The power of collaboration is greater when many different perspectives are included.

Addressing Diversity and Inclusivity

A diversity of ideas and contributions, one that originates from a diverse community, from all walks of life, cultures, countries, and skin colors—is vital for building sustainable and healthy open source communities. Individuals from diverse backgrounds inject new and innovative ideas to advance an inclusive and welcoming ecosystem for all. Linux Foundation is committed to building diverse and inclusive communities. Creating those diverse communities requires effort and commitment to creating inclusive and welcoming spaces. We continue to work to address this problem through various initiatives, including:

Inclusive Language Efforts

Communities that adopt inclusive language and actions will be able to attract and retain individuals from diverse backgrounds. The Linux kernel community adapted inclusive language in Linux 5.8 release showing its commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. For other projects, the launched at KubeCon North America to standardize inclusive language across the industry.

Open Hardware Diversity Alliance

The Open Hardware Diversity Alliance is a RISC-V incubating project with the mission of bringing together the open hardware community to provide programs, networking opportunities, and learning to encourage participation and support to the professional advancement of women and underrepresented individuals in open source hardware.

Software Developer Diversity and Inclusion

We are also focusing on Science and Research to Advance Diversity and Inclusion in Software Engineering. Our new Software Developer Diversity and Inclusion (SDDI) project will draw on science and research to deliver resources and best practices that increase D&I in software engineering.

Training and Certification

The Linux Foundation provides free training to women and underrepresented communities to support career development. More than 100,000 women have taken our free, Massive Online Open Courses (MooCs) in partnership with edX.

DEI is always a loser. When you hire based on skin color or race, you cheapen the product. You make the product less than it can be.

Companies should be color blind when hiring the best person for the job. DEI hires are almost always the worst possible person for that job.

Barack Hussein Obama is a perfect example.

The kernel manages the hardware at a low-level. There are thousands of possible HW optional bits out there, and the kernel your distribution installs has to have at least pluggable-module support for all of them.

However, you can build your own kernel that includes only support for HW that is actually on your computer, and it will be quite a bit smaller.

Linux is/was a scam method to facilitate technology transfers to foreign governments and companies, that succeeded greatly in that purpose. The arguments about it here on FR back 20:years ago were endless, but are over now. The plot was fully exposed when International Business Machines went ahead and bought Red Hat and simultaneously announced they have many more employees working outside the US than within.

If their ideas and contributions were any good they would already be included

“ I’m 72, probably only have a handful of productive years left, ”

Clint Eastwood, David Attenborough…and others are well into their 90s and still enthusiastically starting new projects.

That comment makes almost no sense. All of RedHat's technology was available free on the Internet before IBM bought them. They made their money from support contracts. Do you seriously think that Microsoft doesn't have a ton of people overseas? Apple, same question?

“ That comment makes almost no sense”

Remember FR these days is full of conspiracy theorists. Use your own discretion when reading comments.

That comment makes almost no sense.

Also, Linux was originally written/conceived by a non-American.

Yes, he does have American citizenship now, but he wasn't American at the time it was first released.

If anything, it illustrates how Americans (as shown by the development by Americans of the subsequent releases) can take something and make it useful to everyone.

They (IBM) made their money from support contracts.

Of course they did. Did you not read my post? I stated Linux fostered technology transfers to foreign governments and companies, which is undisputed. And IBM only made peanuts compared to what was lost to the rest of the US.

Linus Torvalds didn't conceive much of anything. He hijacked the UNIX code framework especially the patents and IBM let him get away with it.

take something and make it useful to everyone.

Everyone being the entire world, without having to pay anyone in the US for using it, of course.

>>“The various flavors of Linux don’t use their own version of the kernel.”

>RedHat has several of their own custom versions of “the kernel”.

No offense intended but Redhat can suck eggs. My least favorite distro.

“The Kernel” is https://kernel.org.

Most/all of the distros post kernels that are often based on a well-known base version and then patches are applied via the distro’s package management system. Those patches are often based upon the deltas required to get from the base version to a more recent version of the kernel as posted on kernel.org. The patches may also include updates to accommodate quirks in the distro. As the target hardware is unknown, kernels supplied by the distro maintainers are often bloated and include every module known to man. You can use the distro’s kernels or build your own custom kernel which is tailored to your hardware. Personally, I use the long-term support kernels directly from kernel.org.

Custom non-public kernels arise when there are proprietary device drivers and/or features offered by company XYZ. I’d wager a guess that the alphabets have their own proprietary kernel hacks.

Linus is not politically correct.

Sadly, Linux itself is politically correct as an org.:

Open source is all about #inclusivity, #diversity, #freedom, #equality, and #love. The Linux Foundation is proud to support the LGBTQI+ community around the world – this month and always! #Pride #PrideMonth2022

Our participant diversity breakdown in 2021...30% of all Conference Speakers identified as women or non-binary...23%* of attendees identified as women and non-binary.

Incorrect. He created a POSIX-compliant kernel based on the Minix (a student-oriented teaching kernel) kernel. The only thing Linux and UNIX have in common is POSIX-compliancy.

IBM Jumps on Open-Source Bandwagon with Patent Promise

https://www.technewsworld.com/story/ibm-jumps-on-open-source-bandwagon-with-patent-promise-35590.html

August 5, 2004

IBM announced that it will not use its patents against Linux, and it encouraged other software companies to make the same vow.

As the owner of 60 patents on which the Linux core might infringe, IBM could wreak havoc on Linux if it chose to do so.

“Linux Foundation” is a company (more or less) that produces (IMO, YMMD) rather bad training classes etc. for Linux & related open-source topics. They aren't the people who produce the operating system kernel or any of the many distributions that use it.

Ha, ha, ha!!! Although it is very common in any thread about Linux to find all sorts of bizarre characterizations. I find it hilarious when people write extremely misleading posts for who knows what reason.

The Linux Foundation has been sponsoring Linus Torvalds’ work for the past 21 years. If you go to https://www.linkedin.com/in/linustorvalds/ it says “Linus Torvalds, Fellow at Linux Foundation, Portland Oregon, Main Linux kernel developer since 1991, still active maintainer.” His Linkedin page does not list any other employers.

Are you calling Linus Torvalds a liar? Isn't that some form of sacrilege in the Linux community?
