Josh Maravich, the son of the Hall of Famer "Pistol" Pete, died last week. He was 42. Josh, like his father, played basketball at LSU – he didn't quite have his father's stardom, playing in only 13 games. However, it was a childhood dream for him to play at the arena that bears his father's name.

"I wanted to come here for my dad to make him proud," Josh said in a 2005 article in the LSU school paper, The Daily Reveille, per the university's site. "I knew I wasn’t going to be a star player, but for me being a walk-on was what I always wanted to do."

The school said he died in his family's home in Covington, Louisiana. Pistol Pete was back in the news earlier this year, as Caitlin Clark surpassed his NCAA record for the most points ever scored by a college basketball player.

And other reports having him dying at the “family home”.

Still no cause of death released.

No word on whether or not an autopsy was or will be conducted for an unexpected unattended.

It might not be our business.

If it was the vaxx, other foul play, then it is the public’s business, isn’t it?

In this case, I don’t think people think it’s suicide, overdose, vaccine, etc., because his father died at almost the same age. It looks like it might be something genetic.

Well, I would guess that due to his Father’s death, he had been screened from early on in life for a heart defect. That doesn’t mean that if there was one, there was anything to do about it.

What are you talking about? He played college ball from 1967 to 1970. Black players were allowed to play long before that back in 1947. Even in the ‘60s teams with five black starters won the national championship. He played while Kareem Abdul-Jabar was playing at UCLA. Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson played at college in the 50’s.

Dr. James Donson, “Focus on the Family”, told the story of Pistol Pete’s death on his radio program. Dr. Dobson was playing a pickup game with Pistol when he died.

I believe Pistol Pete played in quite a few less games that Clark.

Pete Maravich was born without a left coronary artery, it was only discovered during his autopsy. It’s a miracle he lived as long as he did.

If it hasn’t been released, it hasn’t been released. Might look like drugs, but take weeks to confirm via tests.

Not in the SEC. LSU’s 1st black player was in 1970. During the years that Pete played, the SEC had no black players in 1967, 1 in 1968, 2 in 1969, and 4 in 1970.

Also, the ladies' ball is smaller.

But not against black men in the NCAA due to segregation.

That's quite the tan. Pete's school was not integrated, but many of his opponents were.

He must have had the same rare congenital heart defect that took his father’s life at age 40 in 1988.

Re: "Not our family. Not our business the way I see it."

If they announce someone's death, they should also state the cause of death.

But not against black men in the NCAA due to segregation.

Maravich played in 1967-70, so segregation in the Southeaster Conference was over by then.

When did SEC basketball desegregate?

The bigger change, of course, came in the South. By the 1966-67 season, every Southern conference, even the SEC, had integrated basketball teams. "It was quite clear after March 1966 that Southern basketball teams would have to change or become increasingly noncompetitive nationally," wrote historian Charles Martin.

Pete's school was not integrated,

LSU was integrated (starting in 1950) but there was no varsity black basketball player until 1971.

Collis Temple Jr. of Kentwood became LSU's first African-American varsity athlete during Press' final season of 1971–1972. The 1971–1972 season was also the Tigers' first playing in the LSU Assembly Center.

When he joined the team in 1971, the Louisiana National Guard was called to protect him from angry segregationists.

See post 30. In Pistol Pete’s last year at LSY there were onlu four opposing black players. Less in his first two years.

With that said, he was an undeniable talent in a different era — no three point, no time clock, and very few black players in the SEC. We really can’t compare him today’s to talent because apples are not bananas.
