XAI has its sights set on creating the world’s largest supercomputer and, according to a recent announcement, the Elon Musk-founded artificial intelligence company has selected Memphis for its site.
The Greater Memphis Chamber revealed the southwestern Tennessee city had landed the planned project on Wednesday, saying it will be the "largest capital investment by a new-to-market company in Memphis history." The supercomputer will be called the "Gigafactory of Compute," the group said.
Musk said it's "true" in a reply to an X post that contained footage of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s press conference announcing plans for Memphis to get the supercomputer.
The Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine, Tennessee Valley Authority and others must still sign off on the project, according to the Greater Memphis Chamber.
The AI firm "expects to create high quality jobs upon completion of Phase 1, with opportunities for more substantial investment in future phases," the nonprofit group said.
"Memphis is a city of innovators, so it’s no surprise that it feels like home to those looking to change the world," Memphis Mayor Paul Young was quoted as saying. "We have great partners at the Greater Memphis Chamber and MLGW who were ready to make this happen. We had an ideal site, ripe for investment. And we had the power of our people who created new and innovative processes to keep up with the pace required to land this transformational project."

There are two TVA power plants very near by. I didn’t expect to see them so far from the Tennessee valley.
I just checked the map, and the TVA’s Allen Fossil plant is right up alongside President’s Island. Looks like a good place!
As far as you finding bullets, can you afford to sell and move out into the countryside? Stray bullets whizzing around just don’t seem healthy!
Translation: "We gave Musk a massive and innovative tax break..."
Huh? That’s North of Nashville. Almost in Kentucky. The place Musk is building is in Memphis.
Yeah, here’s the closed Electrolux plant, just South of President’s Island and the TVA plant.
Just 1000 yards away from the closed Electrolux plant is this:
TVA Allen Combined Cycle Plant
Allen Combined Cycle Plant, the seventh combined cycle plant TVA has added to its power portfolio since 2007, began supplying power to the grid in April 2018. The plant—located near Memphis, Tenn.—has two of the world’s largest and most efficient turbines that run on natural gas, with a generating capacity of about 330 megawatts each. The site also has a combustion steam turbine with about 420 megawatts of capacity, enabling total plant capacity to reach over 1,100 Megawatts—enough power to supply more than a half million homes.
With its state-of-the art technology, Allen is the most efficient combined cycle plant in the TVA gas fleet. In August 2017, more than 3,000 solar panels became operational to provide just under 1 megawatt of power to supply the site with renewable energy capacity. Operation and maintenance of the site is provided by approximately 30 full-time employees.
Memphis? Obviously, someone didn’t do his due diligence. Doesn’t Musk want to be in a place where people want to Work? That isn’t the Memphis mindset.
Largely a vertical drop.
About 200 coal cars a day at the power plant.
Douglas Adams' send-up of AI had the most powerful computer that could be designed and constructed give a seemingly meaningless answer, then when asked to explain it, told the designers that they'd have to ask the even more powerful computer, and how to build it.
BTW, geeks, I regard that late author's big-selling "Universe" series of books as one long banana-peel gag.
Sidebar: I'd not be surprised to learn that Nvidia's been using AI to accelerate its own development of AI.
String theory list ping, using an old favorite, a comedic allusion to a myth from classical times, starring my favorite Marxists:
