Elon Musk's xAI selects southern city for 'world's largest' supercomputer site

XAI has its sights set on creating the world’s largest supercomputer and, according to a recent announcement, the Elon Musk-founded artificial intelligence company has selected Memphis for its site.

The Greater Memphis Chamber revealed the southwestern Tennessee city had landed the planned project on Wednesday, saying it will be the "largest capital investment by a new-to-market company in Memphis history." The supercomputer will be called the "Gigafactory of Compute," the group said.

Musk said it's "true" in a reply to an X post that contained footage of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s press conference announcing plans for Memphis to get the supercomputer.

The Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine, Tennessee Valley Authority and others must still sign off on the project, according to the Greater Memphis Chamber.

The AI firm "expects to create high quality jobs upon completion of Phase 1, with opportunities for more substantial investment in future phases," the nonprofit group said.

"Memphis is a city of innovators, so it’s no surprise that it feels like home to those looking to change the world," Memphis Mayor Paul Young was quoted as saying. "We have great partners at the Greater Memphis Chamber and MLGW who were ready to make this happen. We had an ideal site, ripe for investment. And we had the power of our people who created new and innovative processes to keep up with the pace required to land this transformational project."

I thought Musk was a smart guy?

Musk must find exceptional value in corrupt, incompetent, illiterate, greedy bureaucrats, and utilities service that's about the worst in the nation. Throw in the out of control crime and property theft, and no-policing police, and Musk has chosen the trifecta of misery.

Maybe he misses South Africa and wants his very own here?

It’s in the 8 year old Electrolux plant, that shut down after coming to Memphis. Maybe it’s a punishment site for his managers abroad? “Get better results or I send your ass to Memphis!”

Memphis, Tennessee is 8.3% larger than New York City in terms of land area. It depends on WHERE you locate the data center.

They were here on Monday. The HNIC gave them a tour in his presidential motorcade, consisting of 62 officers in cars, SUV's, and on motorcycles. The mayor rides around like that every day, shutting down streets, businesses, and intersections, as he oversees perpetual failure as his means to power and money.

Chaos, crime, illiteracy, and poverty, are the meal-ticket in corrupt blue utopias.

Memphis being a crime-ridden city is a factor, but it likely wasn’t the deciding one for Elon Musk’s XAI choosing Memphis for the supercomputer. I don’t think he hasn’t factored that item in his decision.

Here are some reasons why Memphis might have been a good choice despite the crime rate:

* Cost: Memphis has a relatively lower cost of living and operating a business compared to other major cities. This could translate to significant savings in running a massive supercomputer facility.

* Location: Memphis is geographically central in the US, offering advantages in data distribution and connectivity for the AI project. Also, Memphis metro area is BIG. You can locate the data center far away from the crime ridden localities.

* Infrastructure: Availability of suitable infrastructure might have been a key factor. Memphis reportedly had a former industrial facility that could be repurposed to house the supercomputer.

* Support: State and Local Memphis government and organizations likely offered strong support and streamlined processes to make the project attractive to XAI.

It’s important to note that while Memphis may have crime challenges, large scale facilities like supercomputers often have their own extensive security measures.

Yes it is. I find bullets in my pool cleaner basket almost every week. The evenings and nights sound like a battlefield of small arms fire. The police won’t even respond when bullets find your siding, windows, or car. They are also just as bad as the thugs, because that’s who the mayor hires as the cops. Really.

In the Pacific northwest, electricity for data centers costs about 7 cents per kwh. It’s hydro renewable plus the great outdoors offers cheap natural cooling for much of the year. In Norway, there are natural blondes to consider, but more socialism.

It's possible Musk could just purchase the remainder of Presidents Island (where it's going to be located) and gate off the only access road. He could have his own Island of around 800 acres of land for his own compound. It's still got rail and barge access.

For about 10% of the cost of other cities with adequate infrastructure.

One habit of driving through Memphis...is to drive through Memphis and not stop. Although to be honest, the airport there wasn’t bad but it’s 4-5 years since I’ve flown through there.
