XAI has its sights set on creating the world’s largest supercomputer and, according to a recent announcement, the Elon Musk-founded artificial intelligence company has selected Memphis for its site.
The Greater Memphis Chamber revealed the southwestern Tennessee city had landed the planned project on Wednesday, saying it will be the "largest capital investment by a new-to-market company in Memphis history." The supercomputer will be called the "Gigafactory of Compute," the group said.
Musk said it's "true" in a reply to an X post that contained footage of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s press conference announcing plans for Memphis to get the supercomputer.
The Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine, Tennessee Valley Authority and others must still sign off on the project, according to the Greater Memphis Chamber.
The AI firm "expects to create high quality jobs upon completion of Phase 1, with opportunities for more substantial investment in future phases," the nonprofit group said.
"Memphis is a city of innovators, so it’s no surprise that it feels like home to those looking to change the world," Memphis Mayor Paul Young was quoted as saying. "We have great partners at the Greater Memphis Chamber and MLGW who were ready to make this happen. We had an ideal site, ripe for investment. And we had the power of our people who created new and innovative processes to keep up with the pace required to land this transformational project."

I wouldn’t locate a slaughter house in Memphis.
TVA operates a slew of hydroelectric dams, nuclear powerplants, and coal and natural gas fired powerplants, which combined can produce electricity that's abundantly available 24/7.
He better have damn good liability insurance for all the X employees who will be assaulted, raped and murdered by the feral demons in Memphis.
I’m sure musk has factored all that in to his decision and whatever he does will be brilliant. He is brilliant you know? /s
How will he attract victims...I mean tech workers to Memphis?
The location is not easy to get to.
It’s far from suburbs where the workers would live.
The neighborhood you have to go through to get to the site is extremely dangerous.
But the cooling water from artesian wells is very clean and the location is right beside the power plant.
There’s a problem and it’s them boo boo.
But the price was right?
Ever heard of the New Madrid fault?
Nice selection...nothing screams high tech, and “future” like a bullet riddled metro area called Memphis. I guess he’s going to teach the locals to code?
Chaos, crime, illiteracy, and poverty,

Sounds like Musk has a great labor pool to draw from ...
Wonder where all the power is going to come from - a secret nuclear reactor?
Memphis is hot. Africa hot for large parts of the year. Cooling costs are going to be astronomical.
The location is in an empty Electrolux factory. That factory only operated for a few years.
This is a good location for such a facility if it were not in Memphis.
The two biggest problems are (obviously) security and lack of qualified employees. Nobody wants to move here.
Except do-gooders who think they’re going to change things for the better (these types usually give up after a few short years).
If he’s doing what I think he’s doing, he just bought his own 800 acre country. His own deep Chanel port access, airport (Gen. Spain DeWitt), heavy rail serviced, single road access engineered for very heavy truck weights, and will maintain his own paramilitary security squads.
“Location: Memphis is geographically central in the US, offering advantages in data distribution and connectivity for the AI project. “

Because with the speed of electrical signals, it makes a difference to be centrally located.

Still where does the power come from? Is he building his own coal fired or nuclear power plant? Plants like he’s building will draw as much as a small city. Wind & solar are not usable for a plant like that.
“Lousy location.”
Guessing that the people that will program and use the supercomputer can live anywhere in the world.
Maybe Memphis is already a big internet routing center. These things aren’t publicized for security reasons.
Wonder why TVA is in the loop. Does Musk plan to build a dam?
Memphis, today, is definitely NOT the “famous” Memphis of the distant past:
[Verse 1]
Long distance information, give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find the party trying to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number, but I know who placed the call
Because my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall
[Verse 2]
Ah, help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She’s the only one who’d phone me here from Memphis, Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi Bridge
[Verse 3]
Ah, help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
But we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis, Tennessee
[Verse 4]
Last time I saw Marie, she was waving me goodbye
With hurry home drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
Marie is only six years old, information please
Try to put me through to her in Memphis, Tennessee
Chuck Berry (and Johnny Rivers) would not sing about Memphis today...
I agree, not a good location for many reasons
next to the local “housing authority’.
dry rub ribs
That would be my guess too. Build a secure campus - heck, build a wall - and use minimal onsite staffing. Dress them in company logo'd Kevlar...
