The first widespread heat wave for the western United States is building and will last through the end of the week. AccuWeather meteorologists warn that heat and dryness will boost the risk of wildfires in some situations.
The combination of a bulge in the jet stream, high pressure building at most levels of the atmosphere and a storm offshore of California will allow the heat to build without any shower or thunderstorm activity for about 50 million people in the West.
The National Weather Service defines a heat wave as a period of abnormally hot weather, with or without high humidity, lasting more than two days. Heat waves can be dangerous, especially for those who cannot take a break in a cool environment. Experts urge people to take it easy and keep hydrated as the heat wave builds.
AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will surge along with the heat in the West and will reach dangerously high levels as far north as Northern California.

Which is worse?
I have no idea. They’re on the same playbook.
I’m glad they defined a heat wave for us. I’ve always wondered what that was.
And their experts telling us that a heat wave increases fire danger. I had no idea.
I’m especially thankful they told us to drink water when it gets hot (“hydrated” being the hip, new, fashionable way to say “drink water”). It never would have occurred to me to drink water when I feel thirsty.
How did we ever get along without Accuweather?
END GLOBAL WEATHER!!!
Forecast to be 106 today—a bit early for such temps in early June. Couple high heat with breeze/wind and knuckle heads that decide to weld out in the field or run their garden tractors to take down weeds—yeah real nice folks...
We try and get all our weed work done before the humidity disappears, thats before 10 am...have a blade hit a rock and voila!
In other words......here comes summer!
Film at 11!
Do not stand in the Sun too much.
Do not forget to eat your vegetables.
Do not spit into the wind.
Do not tug on Superman’s cape.
If I buy a EV will I be spared bad weather?
It has been the coldest and latest spring in decades in the West. They are obviously lying.
How many wildfires are started by arsonists vs. natural causes?
Here in Florida it feels like it’s never going to rain again. My irrigation can’t keep up and my yard is brown. I think we had a 20 minute long rain in the last 2 months. It’s getting to be unbearable.
Dry spring...increased fire danger. Wet spring, more plant growth, so increased fire danger in summer. Rinse, repeat.
How hot does it really get “out West’?
Hot enough for overhead power lines to droop near ground?
Enough for pavement on roads to soften or buckle?
In the UP of Michigan, we used to worry about old fallen blue and green glass insulators from telegraph lines accidentally focusing sun rays and starting fires in brush. I’ve dug a few out of brushy ditches by railroad tracks. Collectible, they are now.
A heatwave in the summer? This has got to be BS!
My hub offered to cut the tall grass lining our neighbirs driveway (free)...but, No...they like it...liberal idiots
iirc, Early June is about when all the cheatgrass begins to dry out and become a vast blanket of tinder.Elevated temperatures only hasten the process, but not by that much. Wind is more a risk factor than a few added degrees of heat.
Those conditions have always existed. The reason you're hearing about them now is that people are living there and - AND - the climate change fear porn narrative must be promoted morning, noon, and night.
“old fallen blue and green glass insulators from telegraph lines”
In the early 70s, there were abandoned phone and telegraph lines in Missouri. We used to shoot the insulators off the crossbars from up on top of the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River. It wasn’t easy hitting those insulators.
There are some abandoned lines along U.S. 97 south of Dorris, CA. Lines are detached and sagging down to the ground. Insulators still on the crossbars.
