Hurricane ‘hot spots’: History reveals US regions where major storms are most likely to strike

While all US coastlines are vulnerable to landfalling hurricanes, history shows us there are hurricane “hot spots” — where storms most frequently come ashore.

While it’s impossible to say where hurricanes are going to make landfall with any sort of certainty weeks and months in advance, the FOX Forecast Center says it’s important to know what areas of the country are most vulnerable historically.

To help with this, researchers at the National Hurricane Center have put together data to show the frequency at which a hurricane passes within 50 nautical miles (nm) of a given point along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Florida is in first place, then Alabama, then Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, maybe even in that order. Florida almost always gets the most hits though.

Hurricanes used to go up the east coast a lot in the 80’s to 2000’s. But lately they’ve gone to the gulf and across Florida’s central portions. Big changes in hurricane development and directions.

I’ve been through 4. One in Alabama and three in North Carolina.

I was also living in the Outer Banks when the 1991 nor’easter went through. It wasn’t a hurricane but was in many ways the worst.

The floor of the pine tree forest around the house I lived in was moving like waves on the ocean.

Might have something to do with the fact that it sticks out into the Atlantic/Gulf like an antenna.

I’ve been through 3 hurricanes, 2 in Florida, one in Texas, and too many tropical storms to count, maybe even some Cat 1s that I’m not including. My family still in FL have been through many more, though. I’m mostly out of the way, so I’m the person everyone checks in with to let everyone else know how they’ve fared. Every year, it’s a big deal when one is barreling right for them. Lotsa prep, lotsa cleanup. I think the worst for our family was Irma. That was a really destructive storm.

All U.S. coastlines? Really? Have Oregon, Washington and Alaska ever been hit by an actual hurricane (in recorded history)? I suppose Southern California might have been hit at some point in history/
