At-home saliva test to detect prostate cancer "better than blood samples"

Scientists at the Institute for Cancer Research in London said the DIY spit test would catch more aggressive tumours and lead to fewer false alarms than the current NHS system...Men simply spit into a tube at home and send the sample off for lab analysis...Their DNA is checked for high risk genes or damage that could indicate prostate cancer...The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, trialled the test on 6,142 men at GP surgeries in the UK.

Obviously, The Sun is no one's first choice for medical advice.

However, the saliva test is clearly being evaluated at the highest levels, and it would be a significant improvement over the current testing methods.

Hope it’s more accurate than the PCR.

In the USA, it is my impression that fewer and fewer men over age 70 are being referred for prostate cancer surgery, unless the cancer is highly aggressive.

Is that basically correct?

In the 1990s, my completely healthy 70 year old father had prostate cancer surgery.

He developed blood clots in his legs during recovery, and almost died.

Correct. Over age 70, the prognosis is about the same for surgery as it is for radiation treatment.

He developed blood clots in his legs during recovery, and almost died.

Part of my recovery instructions is to walk 10 minutes/day.

More walking = less clotting.

If you are male and live long enough, it is guaranteed that you will develop prostate cancer. "Long enough" in this case, means into your 90's, though.

A DNA test would be much more accurate than PSA is that’s what they are comparing it to.

“ would catch more aggressive tumours and lead to fewer false alarm”

This would be the case.

On the other hand, a DNA test could miss cancers with unknown DNA mutations.

"However, the saliva test is clearly being evaluated at the highest levels, and it would be a significant improvement over the current testing methods."

I believe this new saliva test to be debatable for accuracy. We trusted mRNA "vaccines" for Covid that has not turned out to be the wonder "vaccine" promised. Blood testing for PSA has been highly accurate for many many years.

Also, unlike women who can develop uterine, breast, or other reproductive cancers relatively quick, prostate cancer is very slow growing tumor and many doctors just follow the testing until it gets to the point of removal. I'm 74 and my yearly blood draw shows NO increase in PSA. But then I've also been taking the Saw Palmetto supplement for years.

Sorry, I just don't trust big pharma anymore. Still, if this test turns out to be accurate, why get a specific PSA blood draw?

If you are male and live long enough,
= = =

What if you are transmale?

Won’t that give you a negative on male-ness?

Oh My, Do I still want to be a transmale?
