>> This is a primary. Republicans only voting.

Wrong.

Texas is not (yet) a closed primary state. A large number of ‘Rats have crossed over to vote in Republican primaries.

*But whether Phelan can hold on to the speaker’s gavel is unclear. One of his own committee chairmen, Republican Rep. Tom Oliverson of Cypress, declared his candidacy for speaker in March.*

Another article-texastribune.org.
It appears that the only way total him out is to GIVE the seat to a democrat in November.

Cornyn will be safe in ‘26 if this stuff continues. He’ll be 72 and wants the majority position. Texas should be leading the charge on conservatism. Go figure.

I agree. Democrats didn’t have much to vote for in their primaries so they voted for the worst republican.

I also have to agree that Texans are lazy and turnout percentages of 30% or so is pathetic. They do not care about their civic duties and just can’t take an hour of time to early vote or vote on election day. The handing of this seat back to someone who makes a jackass out of Texas and them is pathetic. Bush, Perry, Rove, etc. just GAG me as they are killing Texas values.

With these kind of friends Cruz should be worried.

The bulk of that district is Jefferson County, and Jefferson County leans slightly Republican.

Despite Phelan squeaking by, it was a great night for Paxton, with several incumbents who voted for his impeachment going down, including Frazier, Klick, Kuempel, Stucky, Holland and Burns. Texas Scorecard The dirty secret is that no true conservative Texan reads the Texas Tribune.

Not if they voted as a democrat in the primary. Only Republicans voted in the runoff

>> Texas should be leading the charge on conservatism. Go figure.

I attended the Texas State Republican Convention as a delegate last week. The party is locked in a fight between grassroots and party elite — that’s the long and short of it.

Grassroots folks are the vast majority of those at the convention, writing the platform and legislative priorities, electing the state party chair, national convention delegates, etc. It’s an uphill battle but we’re making progress.

For example: Phelan ran unopposed in his last race in 2022; in this race he narrowly beat his grassroots opponent. Ken Paxton, the most aggressive conservative state AG in the country, the one that prick Phelan tried and failed to impeach, is HUGELY popular among the grassroots. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is a red-meat conservative, and again wildly popular among the grass roots.

We’re turning the tide. Naysayers posit that it’s too little, too slow, too late. I disagree. The trajectory is where it needs to be and with GOD’s help we’ll get ‘er done.

By the way: Texas and Florida already ARE (as you put it) “leading the charge on conservatism”.

FRegards

Yeah, but a helluva lot of ‘Rats DID vote in an earlier primary — many on Super Tuesday to cast a vote for Nikki Haley against President Trump.

The way it works in Texas is this: in any election cycle, the FIRST primary you vote in casts you as R or D for the remainder of the cycle.

At the recent state convention, moving to closed primary was voted a legislative priority and received enthusiastic support.

>> Tony Buzbee is brilliant.

No kidding. He *almost* makes me willing to reconsider my position that trial lawyers are untermenschen. :-)

Of course it’s easy when your opponent indicted (in Paxton’s case, impeached) based on feelings and emotion and politics rather than factual evidence.
