Periodontitis is an inflammatory gum disease driven by bacterial infection and left untreated it can lead to complications including tooth loss. The disease has also been associated with diabetes mellitus, preterm birth, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. One of the chief bacterial culprits behind periodontitis is Porphyromonas gingivalis, which colonizes biofilms on tooth surfaces and proliferates in deep periodontal pockets.
Matcha, a finely ground green tea powder, may help keep P. gingivalis at bay. Researchers in Japan report that matcha inhibited the growth of P. gingivalis in lab experiments. In addition, in a clinical study involving 45 people with periodontitis, people who used matcha mouthwash showed significantly lower levels of P. gingivalis in saliva samples than at the start of the study.
Matcha, which is used in traditional ceremonies and for flavoring in beverages and sweets, is made from raw leaves of C. sinensis.
Researchers carried out a series of in vitro experiments to test the efficacy of a matcha solution against 16 oral bacterial species, including three strains of P. gingivalis. The matcha mouthwash showed little activity against strains of commensal oral bacteria.
Within two hours, nearly all the cultured P. gingivalis cells had been killed by the matcha extract, and after four hours of exposure, all the cells were dead. Those findings suggested a bactericidal activity against the pathogen.
The patients were randomly assigned to three groups: One group received barley tea mouthwash, the second received the mouthwash made from matcha extract, and the third received mouthwash that included sodium azulene sulfonate hydrate, which is used to treat inflammation.
The analysis revealed that patients in the group that used matcha mouthwash showed a significant reduction in the level of P. gingivalis. Patients in the other two groups did not show that same significant reduction.

I drink a potion every morning that includes 2g of matcha. I’ll try swishing it.
I looked on Amazon. Saw a lot of Matchas.
Any particular brand?
I like word of mouth for trying new things.
Thanks in advance

Baking soda.
Why does it have to be Matcha? Shouldn’t any green tea work/
bbb
Oh, now you tell me.
Does it leave insides of your mouth feeling chemically burned, as with Listerine?
I bought some Matcha a few years ago but it tasted so awful I gave it to a friend. What is in you potion that makes it taste OK?
I just read this article that talks about it...

Any green tea should work, but matcha will be more potent due to the fact it is a ground powder tea instead of a less refined leaf tea.
The reason is that the fine powder will release more of the chemical impact (whatever that is) because of the vastly increased surface area contacting the water.
To some degree other leaf teas should have a similar impact since nearly all true teas from the tea plant (as opposed to flower, botanical, or other herb teas) come from the same plant, and are just different cuttings and curing methods.
Seems like good brushing and flossing - with about any antiseptic mouthwash would be fine and dandy...
I don’t like the taste of matcha, so originally I added 2g of turmeric, .5g each of Ceylon cinnamon and ginger, 3g of cacoa powder, and 1g of maca powder (also from Black Friday). I mixed up a bunch up so I don’t have to mix it every day. I do have 0.1 gram scale.
Since January I’ve been doing intermittent fasting so I only use 20% (1.4g) of the mix along with 2g matcha. I’ve also added in 4g of an 11 supplement mix I created that includes 1g of glycine which has a natural sweetness and further masks the matcha taste.
I shake this altogether in a glass bottle. I also just use room temperature water.
Matcha is really healthy. It has lots of nutrients, more EGCG than green tea, other nutrients, and is easier to consume. There are different grades of matcha, with ceremonial grade being the most expensive, and probably best tasting.
Bump!
Very informative, thank you.
I have been drinking Matcha green tea for more than 5 years. Almost daily. I get this brand and brew sun tea by the half gallon.
