A Utah school has sparked fury after removing the name of a student who died of cancer just months before graduation - despite completing all requirements.
Samantha Corey, who was battling a rare and terminal form of the disease, passed away before she could finish her senior year at American Fork High School.
As Samantha's siblings prepared to stand in her place, they were told by the district they wouldn't be permitted. Her name was also omitted from the ceremony.
It wasn't like we were wanting special treatment for her,' Kimberly Corey, Samantha's mother, said to FOX13. 'I just think we didn't want her to be deleted out of it, so it felt like, this is how it was supposed to be, and then they deleted her name and took it.' Samantha's family was distraught hearing the news, specially because Samantha had completed all of her graduation requirements before her death.
'We just would have liked to have her name be read, and her siblings wanted to walk across the stage for her. Her brother wanted to wear her hat,' Kimberly Corey said to KUTV. 'We weren't expecting a big to-do; we just don't want her to be deleted, you know.'
Samantha's journey with cancer began during her sophomore year, but she was determined to continue her education at American Fork High School during chemotherapy treatments.

Rich Stowell, of the Alpine School District, issued a statement explaining their stance on graduation memorials, emphasizing a balance between honoring the deceased and celebrating the achievements of all graduates.
‘As students across Alpine School District celebrate graduation from high school, we are mindful that some students tragically pass before they and their families get to experience that milestone.
We are a nation of rules, not leadership.
They love death?
You have to wonder, what was driving this decision.
The school had several choices.
Theyβre all democrat party hacks and union thugs.
Oh, yes. I felt some of his triumph in that moment.
That must have been one of the longest and most difficult walks you ever took.
What a lovely young lady. Prayers for family and friends.
So what was the problem? Was she too white for the woke asswipes running the schools?
If she were a POC they would have named the school after her.
They hate life of people fighting for life but love people sacrificing babies to death. Education apparently attracts some freaks and morally corrupt people. Some people just want to see the world / life burn.
Whoever made that decision is dumber than a fence post .
As someone who spent months at the child cancer center at Rady Children’s Hospital and the Mcdonald’s House across the street ....there have been far too many for years.
Utah really fell into the gutter
Teacher’s unions are not interested in anything that does not put money in their pockets.
In my HS days (1947-1951), most of the class parents would have lynched or tarred & feathered every POS associated with that horrific decision...
We had students dying right & left as polio ran rampant...
Something like this would have been unthinkable...
Americans were Americans back then... Not the pussified, low IQ, cowardly, obedient serfs like today’s disgraceful Americans...
Oh my gosh. Give the family the graduation. Theyβve been through hell. Theyβre not asking for much and Samantha completed all of the requirements. Let her grieving family have this moment.
The graph doesn’t really say much.
It’s showing *death rate*, not those who’ve gotten cancer.
It it stops in 2021, well before the possible effects of a vaccine might be seen.
It was - thank you for recognizing that...but I was darned proud for him as well. That principal went on to be County School Superintendent...with my vote, of course.
A classmate of mine who was killed in a car crash, had the yearbook dedicated to him.
That's good news. But, it's a shame the family had to fight for the school to recognize their daughter.
Rest in peace, Samantha. Only 18 years old. Far too young...

It’s Utah. Maybe the family’s politics aren’t the school board’s cup of tea. Or it could be religion. My uncle lived in Utah for decades and his kids were little in the ‘60s and ‘70s. He wasn’t Mormon. He was persecuted in business, and his kids had a rough time both in school and socially. Dad never understood why he stayed.
I’d like to think that the Mormon culture has mellowed over the years and outsiders are more accepted.
IDK. Just a theory.
