Russian Black Sea Fleet 'Missing' After Crimea ATACMS Strikes
Newsweek ^ | 5/1/2024 | Isabel van Brugen

Russia has no warships deployed in the Black Sea at present, Ukraine's Navy said on Wednesday, shortly after Moscow said Kyiv had attacked annexed Crimea with U.S.-supplied missiles—using Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS.

Ukraine's military didn't detect Russian warships in the Black and Azov Seas on Wednesday morning. "In the Black and Azov Seas [the] enemy ships are missing," the press service of the Ukrainian Navy said.

Kyiv has targeted Russia's Black Sea Fleet throughout President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of the country, which began in February 2022. Ukraine has vowed to reverse the Russian leader's 2014 annexation of Crimea, which now serves as Moscow's central logistics hub for its forces in southern Ukraine.

Russia appears to have relocated some of its prized Black Sea Fleet vessels from its port in Crimea to avoid further losses following successful Ukrainian drone and cruise missile strikes.

Satellite images from last October showed that Russia's Fleet was fleeing from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai in southern Russia as Ukraine targeted Moscow's vessels. Ships were also heading to the Russian naval port in Feodosia further east on the annexed Crimean Peninsula.

More recent satellite images, from last month, shared by open source intelligence OSINT researcher MT Anderson, appear to show that the Black Sea Fleet has largely abandoned its major Crimean naval bases.

“In this modern technological era spawned by the silicon chip, naval surface combatants, land armored vehicles and helicopters over the battlefield are obsolete death traps. “

People have been predicting the last days of helicopters, tanks, aircraft carriers, etc. since forever. There’s a constant battle between offence, defense, tactics, and every element on the battlefield. For the most part weapons systems don’t go obsolete. What happens is the tactics they are used by evolve. Russian tanks took a beating because they sent them into the attack without a screen of infantry. As for things like drones attacking tanks, the tanks will be evolved with active protection systems to shoot down the drones. As for the vulnerability of ships the US navy is evolving what they call distributed systems to provide defense and offense in depth. In other words, the ship will be surrounded by a swarm of smaller elements that can help defend it or press the attack while leaving the ship out of range or offensive systems.

After I left my final job, I wrote a proposal for a system of swarm drones to protect people and installations from the type of attacks we see in Ukraine. Unfortunately, the California startup that had the technology we needed was funded by CCP princes. The companies I was working with and I had to drop it as the technology wasn’t available anywhere else. Had it worked when a drone swarm was sighted a counter swarm would have attacked them using echo-location. It was a real reach technologically speaking but if it had worked it would provide an effective counter to the threats we see today. The battlefield evolves.

Surface combatants of any type, including individual soldiers, are generally going to be hosed, unless effective anti-drone defenses are devised...

And of course our bases in Syria and Iraq are getting hit more frequently and we’re losing folks there.

That dropped off to zero for a bit, but picked back up somewhat, with the Ike now in the Eastern Med & still concerned with Israel's defense, apparently.

It will be back and fourth, up and down...

But if you look around, some places that were OK are on fire today.

Eventually, there will be some conflict somewhere that we get sucked into it, and Russia will be waiting with arms, intel, logistics, training... just like us in Ukraine, just like what they did to us in Korea and Vietnam and what we did to them in Afghanistan in the Cold War.

This is a chapter in history that was closed in 1991 (wise minds were in power then) and we are the ones that reopened that door in 2022. I'm sure we'll deny that too in the future. We are extremely talented at reinventing history to suit our needs of the day.

Gettink wasted on useless attacks on Dzhankoi air base.

The Putin moved all the S-300 and S-400 systems away from Dzhankoi before the stupid Ukies burned up a bunch of ATACMs and Storm Shadows for nothing.

I remember you crowink about that a couple of weeks ago...

This didn’t have “Secret” all over it?

You need to make everything secret so that the public can’t scrutinize any decision made.

It’s the publics money, done in their name, and even their children may bleed for these decisions, but they don’t need to know anything.

We stopped using the phrase “government transparency” a long time ago.

Come on guys!

Swarm “seagull” drones each packed with C4 explosive, programmed to enter any orifice on a carrier ( and there are many), themselves launched from a submarine based cruise missile, precisely guided to target, cannot be defended. Those gulls will only be the initial attack. Simply would no longer invest in large surface combatants or crew them with brave young people. The sad reality is that this new technology is so destabilizing to the current Pentagon infrastructure and vested priorities that the US itself is not developing these offensive capabilities against potential threats such as the big Chinese navy. The experience of your company is not the exception.

Biden sent just over 100 ATACAMS in March. They fired about a dozen prior to Congress authorizing the transfer and funding for those missiles. Somewhere in a smoky backroom, someone has told Russia exactly how many ATACAMS were sent to Ukraine and Russia is counting them.

The current spate of attacks are or were to soften up Russian Air Defenses. Ukraine and the West wants to hit the Bridge between Russia and Crimea.... Russia has essentially told NATO, the US and Ukraine that all bridges and links to Ukraine will be targeted in response.

The US will use the ATACAMS while saying the Ukrainians are doing it against the bridge in Crime.? It is a political trick at this stage in the war and an attempt to disrupt the annual May Parade, to embrass Putin. Or will they sacrific all the bridges between Hungry, Poland, Moldovia cutting Ukraine off along her river borders with other nations? I fully expect the USA to fire them and blame Ukraine. I fully expect Russia to return the favor in a manner that makes it even more difficult for NATO to arm Ukraine.

Soon enough that Fleet will be in the Black Sea. It is still the Russia Black Sea fleet’s HQ and it will never be turned over the to United States. For that matter, all those British and French hopes of stationing their ships in the Black Sea are off the table too. No matter how bad it gets for the current BS Fleet, Russia blocked the West from putting their nuclear missile ships in the Black Sea.

Odessa and the coastline will be in Russian hands by the end of Summer.

Russia has only fired about 30 missiles a month against Ukraine since November and they are producing over 100 a month back in November. I suspect that Russia has built up quite an arsenal of offensive missiles to augment the soon to be 50,000 FPV drones and other longer range drones in the yet to be announced Russian offensive.

Yes, but they usually send a heads up before shelling or firing on US bases in order to give us time to hunker down. Been that way since Iraq. When the gloves finally do come off, the US will be told that this is our last warning of incoming fire, and after that its anyone’s guess when something is fired at US interests.

Our enemies have not yet cut communications with us... however, the Biden White House has never responded to the Kremlin’s congradulations on winning the November election 3 years ago. When the one way street is silent both ways, the US is in trouble.
