13. Sparple

This word is not only fun to say, it can also come in handy. It means to deflect attention from one thing by making a big deal of something else entirely.

Whoa, *four* movies! I guess the comeback of nefarious is well underway!

I like “Fopdoodle.” I’ll use it.

Part of my family is Scottish, and I was so disappointed to find out they were “bluidy Lowlanders”...

LOL 😁 I’m assuming mine were from the Highlands since they immigrated to, and remained in, the mountains and because of the way my grandfather seemed to have some contempt for the ‘lowlanders’.

Yes it is! I heard it a lot growing up since I spent so much time with my grandmother.

My usage of the medieval term, “termagant,” has been on a steady increase since the early 90s when HRC came to national prominence.

Nefarious has participated in a robbery or two, I’m sure.

Growing up, I heard most of them used on a regular basis, with the exception of “Sparple.” Now THAT is a good word!

(Was I in a time warp?)

Sinecure, flummox, and nefarious are still used among well-educated English speakers.

I did like this article and use a number of those words regularly myself but I wouldnt take their assertions too seriously. I quick read another two articles there and was not entirely impressed with the veracity.

These almost seem to be the results of an literary exercise that I could imagine a writing professor assigning, “You have five minutes to write a full article on something, anything is fine. The veracity isnt important for this exercise, just your ability to push through writers block.”

Quixotic, Flummox, Fopdoodle, Blandish, Nefarious, Garrulous, and Fastidious (at least) are still in use anyway.
