"Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will be sentenced in a Santa Fe, New Mexico, court Monday for the killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month.
Prosecutors are seeking the maximum penalty of 18 months in state prison.
Following Gutierrez-Reed's conviction, the judge ordered the 26-year-old to be held in police custody pending her sentencing. She was found not guilty of tampering with evidence.
In recorded jail phone conversations with her mother, boyfriend and her attorney’s paralegal, Gutierrez-Reed called jurors “idiots” and “a--holes” while complaining about the length of time it took them to deliberate, according to a recent filing by prosecutors.
Also in the phone calls, she said that she would not testify in actor Alec Baldwin’s upcoming criminal trial if subpoenaed and that she wants him to go to jail, too.
The almost two-week criminal trial centered on the shooting on the “Rust” film set in 2021, when Baldwin held a prop gun that fired a live round of ammunition, killing Hutchins, 42. The bullet also injured director Joel Souza.
During the prosecution’s closing arguments, special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey told the jury that Gutierrez-Reed “was negligent, she was careless, she was thoughtless.”
But Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles, said the prosecutors had not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for taking live rounds onto the set and alleged that Baldwin was ultimately responsible for Hutchins’ death.
He also doubled down, saying “What caused her to pass was Mr. Baldwin going off-script and pointing the weapon.”
Bowles added that “the only ultimate act is the pointing of that weapon. Ms. Gutierrez wasn’t in the church, she didn’t point that weapon, she didn’t pull it.”
Baldwin, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter, is set to stand trial in July.
“Defendents are instructed by their lawyers not to show emotion in court”
Well she crying he ass off right now
“He hired a totally unqualified person to handle deadly weapons. He is equally to blame.”
that’s the way that i remembered it too: that woman had zero qualifications to be a movie set armorer ... Baldwin hired her simply to save money ... cutting corners costs lives on movie sets ... just look at what happened to Vic Morrow ...
Baldwin should be sued into penury by the estate of the murdered director ...
Baldwin was the producer, financier, and head honcho on this film and HE hire an unqualified armorer to save some bucks ... the murdered director’s estate should sue Baldwin into penury ...
The defense lawyer is incompetent.
No matter who hands you a gun, you are obligated to determine whether it is loaded.
Go into a gun store and give the clerk a gun you wish to sell or trade. What is the first thing he does?
He drops the mag and then racks the slide, thus assuring himself tht the gun is not loaded, and if so that process unloads it.
That will be the procedure for a pistol. If it is a revolver, whether double or single action,k the cylinder will be examined chamber by chamber to assure that it is not loaded.
The Armour was careless in not examining the revolver, but unless she is the one who secretly loaded the gun knowing how reckless mr nasty is, sentencing her is not reasonable.
“ Also in the phone calls, she said that she would not testify in actor Alec Baldwin’s upcoming criminal trial if subpoenaed…”
Oh yes you will.
L
She was an apprentice with another armor for a few years before she got this job. I guess I’m a conspiracy theorists because I don’t think Alec’s action were an accident.
Yes.
My first question is: The gun was to be pointed at someone in the next scene.
Who? And who did not like him?
The Fall Girl. Probably the only one who will pay for it.
I don’t see how Baldwin will be able to skate this...................
If Alec Baldwin was rehearsing a suicide scene he would have checked that weapon.
He’s as much as fault as the novice armorer is, anybody could have slipped live rounds in unless that thing had strict custody control... or she didn’t do her job properly... Alec Baldwin SHOULD HAVE CHECKED. Imbecil.
Mine as well. That POS violated the first and most basic tenet of handling a gun, always assume it is loaded. He doesn’t have the brains given a pissant and shouldn’t have been handling a weapon at all.
The Armed Services have armorer’s falling out of trees I don’t see why Hollywood would really look any farther than an qualified and experienced veteran but... I’m not over there at the HR office.
“It is NOT an actor’s job to check a firearm.”
BS, basic i.e. BASIC firearms safety is “Check your weapon”
I’ve read that back in the’50s and 60s when a lot of World War II vets were working Hollywood everybody checked their f****** weapons especially the guys that were in the armed services it was second nature it should still be second nature The NRA teaches it as second nature police forces do it routinely, everybody is checking their weapon except Hollywood actors.. is that what you’re implying? Because that is totally against any quals regarding firearm safety.
In Hollywood, everything is probably a lot to do with ‘connections’.
(I’d certainly feel safer with a vet.)
A firearm is not an automotive vehicle.
Prosecution only needs to have testimony of his previous firearm training.
Her daddy was and armorer...............
No. It is clearly stated in the article that THE GUN aimed and fired itself while it was near Baldwin. Obviously the gun also must have loaded the live bullets while ejecting the dummy bullets. The prop manager also tried to keep the area clean by discarding any used cartridges. He should be given a raise in salary.
“But Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney, Jason Bowles, said the prosecutors had not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for taking live rounds onto the set ...”
Since when do they EVER have live rounds on a movie set ???? Why would there even be LIVE rounds in the hands of a prop man or even in the studio inventory ?????
Yep, he pulled the trigger.
The Armour was careless in not examining the revolver,
= = =
Correct me if necessary, but I think she was busy with other tasks (Armorer should not be busy with other), and someone else handed Alec the revolver.
