The scientists who have been working on changing an invasive moth’s common name, which included an ethnic slur, have made their decision.
Previously known as “gypsy moth,” the species Lymantria dispar is now “spongy moth,” according to the Entomological Society of America, which makes the Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List, an essential database for anyone working with insects.
For the Romani people – an ethnic group originating in northern India that was at one time misidentified as Egyptian – the word “gypsy” has been offensive, dangerous and dehumanizing since it first appeared in the 1500s, Margareta Matache, director of the Roma Program at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University, told CNN in July 2021.

gypsy is not an ethnic slur. It’s the name of an ethnic group that makes its living by robbing and swindling people who are not in the group.
If Gypsies don’t call themselves gypsies anymore why would the gypsy moth be considered offensive ? It’s not like they changed the name to Romani Moths
Spongy Rose Lee.
Jimi Hendrix, Band of Sponges ? Vs Band of Gypsys
tent worms now turn into sponges instead of gypers....just like people.
Love that song. Have not heard that in a long, long time.
How about Irish Traveler Moths, or Pikey Moths, to use the vernacular. We call all still diss the Irish, right?
Now do jewfish. Oh wait, they already did...
It will still be a gypsy moth t me.
Good thing there’s no watermelon moths.
Ban the alphabet. End of offensive language.
The Entomological Society of America can go fukk itself.

John San, what you can
La la Janette, dance in sand
What's the mystery, my son?
Gypsy Dan Caravan
Won Tun Wan with your Chinese fan
Ha ha ha ha, history, my son
Murder and rape with your power
The tenth revolution in far away days
It's come to this
A gypsy's kiss
All your power's gonna fade in the haze
Ya who' Jumme gae bile ya heed
Senorita said
I'll drag yer lungs out through yer nose
Space truckers, free and high
Teamsters get ya by and by
That should keep you on your toes
They got a gun at your head
But you ain't necessarily playing their game
They can't resist
A gypsy's kiss
All that's needed to drive them insane
John Wayne, the Alamo
Crazy Horse, Geronimo
I'll smoke a piece with you
Mind, body, heart and soul
We got rock and roll
And there's nothing they can do
Hear the small voice of truth
Above the shouting despair of the crowd
What do you wish?
A gypsy's kiss
Gets you strong for crying out loud
Pretty sure we’re gonna keep the old name.
As long as we are forced to call things what they are not (to humiliate ourselves), we should get used to calling the democRATs the “smart” party.
Ridiculous....spongy could be considered(by the eternally protective anti-slur” crowd) a derivative slur...
I.e....insinuating that “gypsies” are “sponging” off the society...
Since gypsy moths were first discovered in Eurasia..and gypsies speak “Romani” language...I propose the moths be called “46/25”...the general latitude and longitude of Romania....I am sure ,however, that some people would be offended that 46 is larger than 25 by 21...and 21 refers to a gun salute...which represents colonization and racism...
The Gypsy Moths was a good book too (I never saw the movie). Somehow The Sponge Moths just doesn’t cut it.
Sorry, I meant The Spongy Moths (should use preview more).
