New York City Mayor Eric Adams was baptized at notorious Rikers Island jail on Good Friday.
Adams was baptized by civil rights campaigner Rev. Al Sharpton, alongside a group of male prisoners.
The ceremony came as part of a visit to the jail, which has seen reports of violent crime and inmate deaths, where Adams met with detainees over Easter weekend.
Adams was seen joining Sharpton in prayer, being baptized and having his feet washed by the reverend.
'Having been arrested and then elected mayor, I reminded these young men that where you are is not who you are,' Adams said in a statement following the ritual.
Adding: 'For the first time in their lives, their mayor didn't look down at them. I sat side by side with them to be cleansed and recommit ourselves to getting on the right path.'
Adams and the civil rights leader have a long association, often hosting events together at City Hall.
The mayor also often calls into Sharpton's radio show to make a contribution.
Adams told New York City radio show 'The Breakfast Club,' Adams said he had also visited the jail earlier in the week and met with 'a group of 12 young brothers who recommitted themselves to Christ.'
'I've been on Rikers Island more than any mayor in the history of the city talking with inmates and correction officers to turn around what's happening on Rikers Island,' Adams said.
The city-run jail complex is currently the subject of an ongoing legal battle that could result in a federal takeover of the facility.

Oh please. (eyes rolling)
Both of them should be INMATES at RYKERS!
Proper Trinitarian formula?
Amen!
Invalid. Sharpton is a minister like Biden is a Mensa member.
Fun fact: Al Sharpton is not a real reverend. He never went to a divinity school or received any sort of diploma. He is a “reverend” only because some real reverend decided to simply ordain Sharpton when he was nine years old.
Not much different from a real general deciding to make me a colonel when I was nine years old.
And it’s a pity that never happened. I would have enjoyed the title.
This is making a mockery of Baptism.
The abomination that causes desolation?
How can you have an article about a baptism without any mention of religion?
No mention of Jesus.
No mention of Mayor Adams testimonial.
No mention of his support for President Biden as he proclaims Easter Sunday as National Transgender Day and if that conforms with his Christian beliefs.
Is this Adams's first baptism?
Baptism? In the east river?
The Trinitarian formula is:
I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Anyone, even Reverend Al Sharpton, can baptize an unbaptized person, as long as they intend what the Catholic Church intends.
This has to be the Bee.
Al is no more a “Rev.” that I am. He’s never had a church, he’s never had a Congregation, and he never went to divinity school. He was “ordained” by a DC preacher at age 10 and has perpetuated the lie ever since. He always quick to jump in front of TV cameras and, from the Tawana Brawley to the Duke Five cases, and many in between, he turns out to be on the wrong side. Yet all the hot rhetoric he can stir into the pot is for his own self-image. Despite the damage he does to innocent people, he never says he sorry. He should be tarred and feathered and run out of town...and pay his taxes.
It’s OK. I’m surprised Adams was never baptized though.
Full immersion baptism in the East River? In the name of satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet? May as well be, given the characters involved!
He has the sign of the devil on him now.
It’s solely the mercy of God that a lightning bolt didn’t fry the both of them.
If ever a baptism didn’t work ….
