I drove the Autobahn once, in 1971, and yes, it was great, even then. And contrary to popular belief it was begun before Hitler, no matter what Hitler claimed. But yes, Ike was impressed by it and urged it on the U.S.

155 mph and 5 sec before the crash was probably chosen as the data point where the speed started to drop. There is no inference that this includes reaction time, which probably happened before this point. Otherwise they would have said she was going 155 three seconds before impact.

I had to laugh at some street signs in Germany:

“THIS IS NOT AN AUTOBAHN!”.........

Driving a 100 in a 60’s car with bias ply tires is quite the thrill.

How many of us have ever driven a car over 90mph let alone 155mph?

Car 130. The computer wouldn’t go any faster. The cruise control worked too. Middle of Nowhere, Nevada.

140+ a few times on motorcycle, German autobahn.

The roads get REAL narrow at both these speeds

You want to buy a child something big and slow. Hard to find 6 cylinder, Ambassadors nowadays.

Last Friday, locally, two 16 year olds in a stolen truck killed a 19 year old girl on her way to work.

“Data from her car’s airbag control module” Is that what they are calling the government mandated spy monitor?

Reminds me of “porsche girl” who got smashed running into a toll booth at 110+ mph. Dad sued when EMTs took grisly photos of the deceased.

Her name was Nikki Catsouras. I have copies of the photos. Grabbed them years ago before they were sent into the Internet Memory Hole. Quite gruesome. I believe it was a police deputy who took and leaked the photos.

I had an old Chevy 6.

Drove on dirt roads. Had to dig myself out when I got stuck.

If I started to slip in the dirt, it was me and the ditch, not some family in the intersection.

I learned to ‘ride it down’, not give up and release the steering wheel.

Drove in snow. Slide off the road. Figure it out how to get back on the road.

All the above gives real driver experience. Not available to 155 Corvette kids.

I was driving a diesel Mercedes at that age. The car would barely do 70.

Indeed they are. I’ve had mine three weeks. It’s the most powerful beast of a car I’ve ever driven, and is a much more than I can handle (and I’ve driven Ferarris, Porsches, BMWs, etc.) 155 is blindingly fast. Top speed in these things is around 185. They get up to 100 in seconds, and just keep going. An 18 year old has absolutely NO BUSINESS behind the wheel of such a vehicle. In fact, I’d say that’s the case for most drivers, maybe even This Writer...

That Chrysler Crossfire was basically a Mercedes with a Chrysler nameplate.

So true, if you must get them a car an early Prius would be fine. A little underpowered, but it is fun to drive slow in a constant battle for higher gas mileage. Do not get them some fire breathing car which is likely going to get totaled.

There was a high school in MA that had the remains of a crashed car in front of it for years. A teenager boy who had attended the school had been killed in it.
The parents donated it to the school as a reminder of what can happen.

I have no idea. Why?

The point is, it don’t matter if ya buy your kid a Volkswagen or Vet. Either one can kill others or get you killed. Happens all the time.

I’d love to have one - these days I couldn’t afford any new car except for one from those scam refurbished lots

But I’ve seen how powerful they are

And there’s been a bunch of people wreck them because of that power

So true, if you must get them a car an early Prius would be fine.

That's irrelevant, like in this case...A Prius driving at highway speeds can easily kill someone on a motorcycle. Don't matter if you're in a Vet or Prius. Happens all the time.

You don’t understand kids and cars. Things happen much faster when stomping on the go pedal in a performance car. And that includes losing control. Immaturity, inexperience and performance cars do not mix.
