Inaugural flight marks major milestone toward return of supersonic travel. XB-1 provides the foundation for Boom’s supersonic airliner, Overture.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today, Boom announced the successful flight of XB-1, the world’s first independently developed supersonic jet, at the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave, California. Like Overture, Boom’s supersonic airliner, XB-1 leverages state-of-the-art technologies to enable efficient supersonic flight including carbon fiber composites, advanced avionics, digitally-optimized aerodynamics, and an advanced supersonic propulsion system.
“Today, XB-1 took flight in the same hallowed airspace where the Bell X-1 first broke the sound barrier in 1947,” said Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic. “I’ve been looking forward to this flight since founding Boom in 2014, and it marks the most significant milestone yet on our path to bring supersonic travel to passengers worldwide.”
Thank heavens it’s not a Boeing airplane.
One pilot? If this is the prototype of the airliner design, there should be a co-pilot. Such redundancy should be done, just in case.
I think this is just a scaled-down proof of concept.
Looks like a fighter jet.
And looks like a passenger jet, for one passenger, who would also happen to be the pilot.
Super cool. Not sure how viable a super sonic airliner is in today's marketplace. At least it doesn't appear to be government funded.
It can actually hole 2 more people laying on their back head to toe with room for 1 carry-on bag. /S
I think this is just a scaled-down proof of concept.
If that's the case, it means that, the passenger version ia many years in the future, a decade or more. Why not just take the Concorde specs and work from there?
Looks like a long way from an airliner...long road to hoe from first flight to commercial flight...but best wishes..
The inaugural flight of XB-1 takes place as Overture continues to advance toward production, with a growing global network of Tier 1 suppliers and an order book including 130 orders and pre-orders from American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines.
verture will carry 64-80 passengers at Mach 1.7, about twice the speed of today’s subsonic airliners. Optimized for speed, safety, and sustainability, Overture is designed to run on up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
THREE air inlets for one engine?
I suppose there's a reason...
Okay, three inlets for THREE engines.
That makes more sense...
Why not just take the Concorde specs and work from there?
Because the Concorde made a tremendous sonic boom. This experiment, along with a similar experiment sponsored by NASA, is all about massively reducing the sonic boom. The Concorde is an example of what NOT to do.
Because the Concorde made a lot of noise and burned fuel like crazy. This new design is supposed to be quiet enough to fly over land and be efficient enough to be profitable.
