Scientists Say They Can Cut HIV Out of Cells

Scientists say they have successfully eliminated HIV from infected cells, using Nobel Prize-winning Crispr gene-editing technology.

Working like scissors, but at the molecular level, it cuts DNA so "bad" bits can be removed or inactivated.

The hope is to ultimately be able to rid the body entirely of the virus, although much more work is needed to check it would be safe and effective.

Existing HIV medicines can stop the virus but not eliminate it.

The University of Amsterdam team, presenting a synopsis, or abstract, of their early findings at a medical conference this week, stress their work remains merely "proof of concept" and will not become a cure for HIV any time soon.

And Dr James Dixon, stem-cell and gene-therapy technologies associate professor at the University of Nottingham, agrees, saying the full findings still require scrutiny.

I lived in San Francisco when HIV was first discovered. I’m a woman, but knew many gay men when I went to classes at American Conservatory Theatre. HIV was so new, newspapers were publishing obituaries with pictures. One of my friends in class, an extremely handsome gay man, was one of the first in town to die. very sad.

You must remember when it was called GRID.

San Francisco, under Dianne Feinstein recommended that if people didn't want to get AIDS, they exercise, get plenty of rest, and drink orange juice.

They shouldn't have discontinued that practice! It's useful to be able to recognize the first symptoms, like Kaposi lesions and macula:

The papers shouldn't have discontinued the practice of publishing pictures. They served as Public Service Announcements.

Fauci did not invent HIV to be cured easily, unless he gets a cut for patenting the cure.

They’re not going to change the behavior that continues to reinfect them with hiv. I don’t really see the point, its just going to p1ss away a crap ton of money for nothing.

This was done over a decade ago using ZFP-based dimeric endonucleases - and tested clinically on lymphocytes (not stem cells for initial trials).

It’s not the cutting that alarms me, it’s the pasting.

Not really "for nothing."

Their continuing to "celebrate their way of life" and then demanding treatment - thus ensuring that our arsenal of effective antibiotics (used to treat a great variety of other, common diseases) is gradually degraded as multi-resistant strains grow stronger - is another "side benefit."

Truly the "gift that keeps on giving."

Correct. As is so often the case, following some basic rules of conduct (along the lines of what God would have us do...) would be the most effective approach. Would help with all other kinds of STDs, too, along with the abortion industry, and generally lift up and advance our civilization. Healthier, happier married people raising families would be a good thing. A quaint notion, but tried and true.

They also said way back then, that we all had to change our lives because aids was gonna kill us all, NO ONE was exempt. BUT, how many women have you ever heard of dying from aids? I know one, Amanda Blake and she got it from her husband who got it from a blood transfusion.

They wanted you to believe that you were just as much in danger from normal sex, as was them asshole bandits.

If the method proves out, it would be a method that could be used against other retroviruses.
