Last year when I attempted to pick my daughter up from school, the volunteers in the carpool line tried to put a fourth grader in my car, not the four-year-old I was attempting to retrieve. Both of us were vehemently shaking our heads, both of us looked totally confused, but the man with the radio would not be deterred.
There are only a handful of white kids at my daughter's school and only two of them are car riders. One of them gets picked up by her mom, and the other, by her dad. This white girl went with the white mom, and I was a white mom. This must be the right van.
This slightly awkward interaction strikes at the heart of the change in our neighborhood. While we were once one of the only white people in the neighborhood, most of the abandoned houses are now snapped up and fixed up by young white couples, often with kids. Those kids don't go to our school.....
The same people who were questioning the school I picked for my girls and starting their own charter school wanted to talk to me about the This American Life podcast about segregated schools. They wanted to talk to me about things I already knew.
Our schools are more segregated than they have ever been. Our educational system is deeply inequitable. Things are only getting worse.
They shook their concerned liberal heads in sadness wondering what they could do

this author chids “white” for not wanting to attend black majority schools, but never mentions that blacks and hispanics are the ones who CHOOSE to live in racial gettos. This isn’t the 1950, no one is forcing blacks to live in certain areas. They CHOOSE to live together and make themselves the majority in those limited areas when the FACT is...
the percentage of blacks is the same now as 100 years ago!
all of this talk about whites becoming the minority or whatever has NOTHING to do with blacks! It’s mostly to do with hispanics and to a lesser degree Asian percentage of the population rapidly growing.
But most blacks apparently think THEY are becoming the majority. Which is just not true! But they live in these “black” bubbles they choose, and don’t understand that the country has the same percentage of blacks it always has! Heck! in the last census the percentage of blacks actually went DOWN!
But if you really want to know what the issue is, it is honestly less about race and more about class. If the school was filled with the children of highly education and wealthy blacks, no one would have an issue.
Because the truth is, it becomes a bigger issue as they get to their teens and dating years. Suddenly you little kid is dating low class thugs. And I dont care what color they are! I would fill the same if they school was filled with white trailer trash!
What’s sad is we pay for theirs and we have to pay for ours.
That gosh darn reality just insists on showing up no matter how you try to stick flowers in it and insist it is a vase.
Live close to grandparents and use that address for a good funded school.
I remember reading, in the 1960s, that in the just desegregated schools in the South, white parents would all withdraw their kids from school and start a private school for them. Wonder how that worked out.
A follow up would be interesting. Is the daughter still in the same district? If not why? What is the racial make- up of her present school?

I was in public school when Dallas, TX decided to desegregate (not that we were segregated due to any law but people chose to live in their own neighborhoods, imagine that) the schools. Major disaster! Beginning in jr. high, students would be bused across town to a new school every year until their senior year in high school when they were allowed to attend their original neighborhood school. My family had bought a home 4 houses from the HS which I wouldn’t be “allowed” to attend, ain’t that something. Somehow, I got lucky and was allowed to stay in my jr. high in 8th grade but I lost all my friends who were bused all over the city. The school dist. didn’t have enough yellow school buses so bought huge city buses to transport so many students so that was a ton of tax dollars.
What once was a boring quiet white middle class neighborhood where nothing ever happened, suddenly turned into chaos. Never mind the fire laws, our 5 minute break between classes went to 3 minutes so no restroom breaks or going to your locker because they would lower big metal gates in the hallways so little monsters couldn’t start anything in the halls. Then we’d be locked inside our classrooms. No one was supposed to be in the stairwells and teachers weren’t supposed to leave their rooms.
However, there’s always the exception. I was once called to the office, can’t remember why, and was attacked in the stairwell. Another time, the teacher had to leave the room and a black guy was all over me with the other ones cheering him on. You couldn’t leave anything out on your desk or it’d be stolen. Day one of me getting a new coat, it got stolen off the back of my chair.
The white families decided within that first year, to move the heck outta that hell hole. It was called the White Flight. Surprise, we moved to a small town out in the middle of nowhere.
I drove through my old neighborhood and showed our kids my school. The car doors were locked and we didn’t slow down in broad daylight, nope, nope. All we saw at the school was a sea of blacks. Found my old house online being sold and, oh my goodness, it has been remodeled with white tiles on the floor, white fake marble in the kitchen and bathrooms, white walls and cabinets, white fireplace, retina burning white, white, white but vibe guaranteed the designer wasn’t white.
If that liberal headed father wants his daughter to get attacked, well sorry kid that your idiot father puts others above your safety.

That year, my parents made me take a test to get into the neighborhood Catholic school. Problem was the nuns were evil and told the group of test takers to fill in which jr. high and high school they were required to go the next year. It was a weirdly worded question and their explanation didn’t make sense. Oh, yeah, that was the fast track for the paid for application to go into file 13. It was a money scam. Seems the correct answer was to fill in the Catholic school’s name as to where you wanted to go to school. Liars, liars, habits on fire. Lying to children just like they did at Sunday mass and Catechism class on Wednesday.
Oooh, did I get into trouble for messing that up even though I was doing exactly what the nuns said to do.
Today, the nearby private school takes the money, too. Our local public school is below par educationally but the kids who leave private school have to repeat the grade because the private school is even farther behind.
And exactly WHY is that? Finish your sentence.
In general, Your Tango sucks. Why post a thread about a year old article? However, I can say with assurance that nothing has changed since the article was first published.
