Sources say the ‘Real Time’ host was furious after he wasn’t invited to Bryan Lourd’s Academy Awards bash.
Sources say the host of HBO’s Real Time fired CAA, his reps for more than two decades, on Monday after he was not invited to CEO Bryan Lourd’s private Oscar party at his home on Saturday night.
Maher, according to sources, was furious that he was snubbed for the event — which was scheduled opposite the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s Night Before bash. The party at Lourd’s home drew the likes of J.J. Abrams, Barry Diller, Kamala Harris, Margot Robbie, Bob Iger, Alan Bergman, Dana Walden, Brian Robbins, Jason Blum, Brian Grazer, Donna Langley, Pam Abdy and such CAA clients as Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston, among others, according to industry newsletter Puck.
Lourd’s private party came a day after CAA toasted nominees including Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright, Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan, Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, Jodie Foster and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, among others, on Friday night at Sunset Tower.
Maher had been repped at CAA by Steven Lafferty, who also serves as the agency’s head of television.
News of Maher ditching CAA comes after the agency recently negotiated a two-year extension for Real Time, which takes the weekly talk show through its 24th season in 2026. The series is one of HBO’s longest-running originals. It launched in 2003 and is second in the premium cable network’s history, behind only the recently concluded Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, in terms of the number of seasons it has run.
Reps for Maher did not immediately respond to THR‘s request for comment.

Sounds like high school. Maher in a tizzy because the mean girls wouldn’t let him into the party. Isn’t he a little old and male to be upset about not being in the cool person Hollywood clique.
I saw him on an episode of Murder She Wrote. He did a decent job despite being fairly homely.

Fourteen years ago, I summed up Maher as a kid who sat alone at the lunch table in junior high. He didn’t fit in with the jocks and he had contempt for the nerds. Regardless, the kids didn’t like him and he knew it. He’s programmed to avoid popular trends but, at the same time, grew to be a bitter, smug outsider who longed to be included. Not inviting him to this party is probably the most painful thing anyone could have done to him.
This is the real reason BM left CAA. Them getting 15-20% of his paycheck for the next two years, Same as CAA has done for the last 20+ years. Bill M will hire a solid Hollywood lawyer to negotiate his deals. Much less expensive than CAA vultures. That need mega cash to fund their gay Hollywood lifestyles.
Who are all those people they list. I recognize the name Kamala Harris and that’s about it.
