Electric vehicles may release more pollution than gas-powered vehicles, according to a report that has recently resurfaced.
The study, which was published in 2022 but has begun circulating again after being cited in a WSJ op-ed, found that brakes and tires release 1,850 times more particulate matter compared to modern tailpipes which have filters that reduce emissions.
It found that EVs are 30 percent heavier on average than gas-powered vehicles, which causes the brakes and tire treads to wear out faster than standard cars and releases tiny, often toxic particles into the atmosphere.

Intended unintended consequences.
Or, in other words, a LARGE majority of American people?
However, I do have problems with these details:
It found that EVs are 30 percent heavier on average than gas-powered vehicles, which causes the brakes and tire treads to wear out faster than standard cars and releases tiny, often toxic particles into the atmosphere.
Our EV crossover weighs about 10% more than the ICE crossover it replaced, not 30%. Enough for me to do the math on tire wear to see if an EV was worth it (among many pro's and con's)? Yes. Enough for it to be a decision breaker? Not in our situation. Especially given that the regen braking seems to result in way less wear on the brake pads (the other part of the quote above that I have a problem with).
There are many valid arguments against the left forcing or incentivizing EV's onto people. And there are many reasons for a lot of people to not buy an EV in a free market. But the two points here IMHO aren't valid.
The tires wear out much faster
The tires don’t wear out faster. The only times I have replaced my tires were when I ran over nails and screws. Ever since I stopped driving behind the Walmart and Home Depot storesI haven’t had that problem either.
In my experience they do wear faster. I love the instant acceleration, and the lack of fumes and noise, but I don’t think having an electric car means I’m saving the environment.
Fair enough to an extent. The reality though is just making the batteries for an EV causes far more environmental damage than any ICE could. That’s not even counting when they burn. And it will be even worse when they have to dispose of all these batteries. That will be an environmental disaster.
Oh and BTW I do not vouch for the article. Just thought it was worth posting...
The issue is never the issue. The point is to make personal transportation unaffordable for the masses.

Tesla 3: 3600#
BMW 3: 3600#
Yeah, people have been saying this for years, it’s just now the media has started to pick up on it.
The next “shocker” is that wind and solar are both net energy negative.
“It found that EVs are 30 percent heavier on average than gas-powered vehicles, which causes the brakes and tire treads to wear out faster than standard cars and releases tiny, often toxic particles into the atmosphere.”
EV brakes last longer than ICE brakes. A problem with EV brakes is rust from lack of use.
At least here in Illinois, electric anything indirectly mostly means coal burning.
Who to believe? The thousands of testiments to excessive tire wear or webheart? hmmm...
But, for sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion. For my part, I won’t be buyong an EV so I won’t be able to say yea or nay.
That doesn’t even take into account the environmental nightmare that results from battery production and disposal.
“But, for sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion. “
That post was fact, not opinion.
what if i told you i don’t buy electric for emissions, i buy it to go 0 - 60 in 2.4 seconds for ~100k instead of 1.1M for ICE?
I'd say, OH I GET THAT. Off the line performance for some EVs is AWESOME.
They could actually make a market case for that. And I'd have NO problem with that. Their environmental BS is just that tough -- BS.
