Why So Many Americans Believe in Bigfoot
MSN ^ | 2/19 | Laura Miller

John O’Connor’s The Secret History of Bigfoot: Field Notes on a North American Monster is a work of mourning. Bigfoot, as O’Connor, a journalism professor, illustrates, is thriving—if by “Bigfoot” we’re talking about the legend of Sasquatch and the communities that have sprung up to seek out the hairy, towering primate said to lurk in the depths of America’s few remaining old-growth forests. It’s that Bigfoot, the symbol, who, O’Connor argues, flourishes and does so because of how much we’ve lost. This Bigfoot is a black armband commemorating everything from the environmental devastation wrought on the continent to the dearth of solitude and quiet available in contemporary life to … the decline of the white working class? Yes, even that.

Before I moved to rural Maine, I regarded Bigfoot as a strictly Pacific Northwest phenomenon. Then a sublimely daffy Facebook group called Unexplained Maine informed me that quite a few Mainers believe Bigfoot stalks the forests of northern Maine, including the Hundred-Mile Wilderness, the last and wildest stretch of the Appalachian Trail. (“There’s nothing but trees for miles and miles up there,” a neighbor told me after driving through the area. “And that’s when you realize that too many trees can drive you insane.”) O’Connor hits the Hundred-Mile Wilderness on his cross-country tour of Bigfoot hotspots, soaking up lore from a grizzled hiker about Bigfoots that are said to have devoured some early European explorers. This man even claimed that Geraldine Largay, a hiker who starved to death in the wilderness in 2013 after wandering off the trail and getting lost, had been kidnapped by Bigfoots as a food source. “Why would they starve her before eating her?” O’Connor asked, but his source just moved on to the next hair-raising yarn.

Depends on which Indian legend of the Windigo you listen to.

Some say it is a man who has tasted human flash and he wants more.

Others say he is a Yeti, Sasquatch or Bigfoot type of creature, and has tasted human flesh and wants more.

Might explain the lack of pictures, they ate the photographers.

If Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) were real, college recruiters would be swarming the woods looking to sign football and basketball players for their teams.

Why is there no Bigfoot roadkill? For fifty years I have been told there’s a big ape out there in the American woods, called Bigfoot, Sasquatch, the Skunk Ape, and various other names. Now you can get a good idea of what kind of animals live in a place, by what gets killed on the road: squirrels, opossums, cats, dogs, rabbits, racoons, deer, etc. In Florida I saw armadillo road pizza very often, but I don’t see it in Kentucky; that alone tells me it’s probably too cold for armadillos in Kentucky. On the other hand, I see (and smell) skunks far more often in Kentucky. But I have never heard of a Bigfoot getting killed on the road anywhere. Even if Bigfoot was rare, it would happen occasionally; deaths along Everglades roads like Alligator Alley were the reason why the Florida panther was put on the endangered species list. Heck, do you remember how Bigfoot was introduced in the movie “Harry and the Hendersons?” He was hit by a family car! But nothing like that seems to have happened in real life.

Along that line, it’s time for true Bigfoot believers to produce some hard evidence. How about some hair samples, for a start? And why aren’t there any Bigfoot bones or teeth anywhere, except maybe for the ones anthropologists labelled as coming from Gigantopithecus and Meganthropus? We’ve seen enough footprints and fuzzy pictures, so if you want us to continue believing, show us the body!

Why is there no Bigfoot roadkill?

Are you sure there is none? Would the government admit it had it, or would it just declare to have been a bear carcass? Why is it illegal to fly drones in U.S. National Forests? If something is living in American forests that has DNA that is 99.5% human, would it be classified as a Native American tribe, or does the Endangered Species Act apply and limit forestry?

This man even claimed that Geraldine Largay,

Wow, just an hour ago I saw that episode on North Woods Law where she went missing and the search parties never found her.

Sorry, but there are indeed armadillos in the wild in KY. It’s a fairly recent thing, but they are there.

On the thread topic, in GA there is a Bigfoot museum in Blue Ridge that is big/popular enough that they have had a large billboard on I-75 in N. GA to attract visitors.

“Why is there no Bigfoot roadkill?”

Simple. They always look both ways before crossing the street.

When I was a Cub Scout, back in the 1950’s, my Indian Name was “Bigfoot.”

Not sure why, my feet weren’t exceptionlly big?

Why So Many Americans Believe in Bigfoot

I am so glad that MSN decided to address this issue and take us away from such humdrum issues of daily life like maybe, oh, securing the southern border and evicting illegals from our country.

Up n here workers on the way to the mill at 6am see Bigfoot s run in front of their cars, even State Police cars. They are fast and they are double daring the cops to hit them.
They are smarter than the cops. They can probably run as fast as a horse, I’m telling ya. Two state troopers saw one and couldn’t catch it.
