Why So Many Americans Believe in Bigfoot

John O’Connor’s The Secret History of Bigfoot: Field Notes on a North American Monster is a work of mourning. Bigfoot, as O’Connor, a journalism professor, illustrates, is thriving—if by “Bigfoot” we’re talking about the legend of Sasquatch and the communities that have sprung up to seek out the hairy, towering primate said to lurk in the depths of America’s few remaining old-growth forests. It’s that Bigfoot, the symbol, who, O’Connor argues, flourishes and does so because of how much we’ve lost. This Bigfoot is a black armband commemorating everything from the environmental devastation wrought on the continent to the dearth of solitude and quiet available in contemporary life to … the decline of the white working class? Yes, even that.

Before I moved to rural Maine, I regarded Bigfoot as a strictly Pacific Northwest phenomenon. Then a sublimely daffy Facebook group called Unexplained Maine informed me that quite a few Mainers believe Bigfoot stalks the forests of northern Maine, including the Hundred-Mile Wilderness, the last and wildest stretch of the Appalachian Trail. (“There’s nothing but trees for miles and miles up there,” a neighbor told me after driving through the area. “And that’s when you realize that too many trees can drive you insane.”) O’Connor hits the Hundred-Mile Wilderness on his cross-country tour of Bigfoot hotspots, soaking up lore from a grizzled hiker about Bigfoots that are said to have devoured some early European explorers. This man even claimed that Geraldine Largay, a hiker who starved to death in the wilderness in 2013 after wandering off the trail and getting lost, had been kidnapped by Bigfoots as a food source. “Why would they starve her before eating her?” O’Connor asked, but his source just moved on to the next hair-raising yarn.

More people believe in bigfoot than believe they will ever get Social Security.

They’re probably right.

Because they prefer to view blurred jiggly video of “wow, what was that”... as proof. Like UFOs why has no-one ever gotten what could be gotten, at night with high quality infrared low light video and/or stills. And hold the cameras still (or steady cam mounted)! Always some “gotcha” click bait... like blair witch movie of.. nothing.

Answer this is a self supporting hoax. Now the Yeti way up in isolated snow mountains Himalayans... well maybe. But not wandering around the swamps and deep woods with zero sign of where they might live.

I saw Bigfoot in front of a big Ford building in St.Louis. By the time I was able to get back to see it up close, they drove it away.

Big Foot doesn’t want your women or your kids. He just wants to be left alone to stalk the tractless forests in peace with his kind.

Big Guy, on the other hand...

Here’s more proof that Bigfoot doesn’t exist. They are supposed to be smart. But the obvious path would be for them would be to get a reality show while those are still popular. Urban encroachment will eventually eliminate their hiding places.

In Maine what folks think they are seeing is probably a Windigo.

If one is found it will be declared an endangered species and the entire Northwest will be made into a Megapod Reserve. So be sure to shoot, shovel backhoe and shut up.

I’m one that likes to think that “Bigfoot” exists and know a few credible people that have some interesting stories. They could just be telling a story though...

I hope that one is never discovered, as it is more fun (and interesting) to me as a Bigfoot, rather than some rare breed of ape or whatever.

I read one article where the person wrote on how the stories of bigfoot (and Yeti, etc.) cross so many cultural and national borders. And that if they aren’t real - it is even more interesting why humans come up with these stories. And have been for hundreds (thousands?) of years.

My own thought - maybe it all goes back to parents telling their kids to be back home before dark and the boogie man gets you.

I know if I’m out in the woods (Pacific North Woods) and get working late alone and it gets dark on me it is easy to conjure up thoughts of Bigfoot! (And cougars.)

There is no real way to tax them so I suspect they shall remain undiscoveted.

I saw a bigfoot once. Broad daylight. From about 70-80 yards away. It was sitting peacefully in the shade of a small tree, looking out over a field or meadow. We stared at it for a good 5 minutes. Terrifying. Thank God it never became aware of us. I tried to report it to the local constabulary, and they thought it was a prank and didn’t pay any attention. I’ve often wondered how many other legitimate sightings were just laughed off, instead of being investigated.

The issue is whether homo sapiens is just a species or genus, and if there are other "relic hominids" about in the forests. It is a matter of academic interest:
Bigfoot and you — ISU prof to offer class that factors Bigfoot into theory of evolution I personally had discounted the existence of Big Foot based upon the lack of remains of the deceased. Prof. Meldrum notes that hominid remains are rarely preserved well and difficult to find in nature. The Patterson film has not been discredited, although many bigfoot videos are hoaxes.

In the Virginia/North Carolina region, bigfoot was called a booger, and the boogey man snatching children refers to that phenomenon. The Native Americans have similar tales. Here is a recent story about a boy spending the night in freezing conditions with a bear after getting lost:
Three-year-old boy missing in woods for two days says friendly bear kept him safe
No one familiar with the habits of bears, thinks a bear would do this. A female hominid would be far more likely to care for another young hominid. I would not be surprised in the least if the U.S. government has more proof about Bigfoot than it admits to having. Understand that if relic hominids were admitted to be living in U.S. Forests, that logging would be limited by the Endangered Species Act.

They must exist. Investigators in Maine have uncovered an attempt to register dozens of them as Democratic voters.

A friend of mine had a sighting when he was young. He said he and his brother smelled the creature before they saw it. Both boys were hunters and my friend said they had never seen anything like it. It walked upright and was toweringly tall - maybe 7-8 ft. He said they were absolutely terrified but it didn’t appear to see them and left the area, walking upright.
