Scientists are sounding the alarm over the spread of “zombie deer disease” amid fears it may evolve to infect humans.
Late last year, experts confirmed Yellowstone National Park’s first case of the infection — officially known as chronic wasting disease — after a deer carcass found in the Wyoming area of the park tested positive for the highly contagious disease. Now, cases have been reported in deer, elk and moose in 33 states across the US, as well as in Canada, Norway and South Korea.
The disease “damages portions of the brain and typically causes progressive loss of body condition, behavioral changes, excessive salivation and death,” according to the New York State Department of Health. It is 100% fatal, and there are no treatments or vaccines.

The issue will be the decline could be fast or slow CJD can tak 6 months or 20 years to destroy you. Why? Know one understands that. Reasons - no one knows. The real terrifying concept.
I may joke about the end of the world as we know it but if I could place odds - prion disease would be my easy dark house truth that no one is looking at.
Unfortunately this one is real. Go look at CWD in deer stated detection to spread. You cannot clear it from the environment as of today. It’s the real deal.
If you are up on this, I do think we need a prion ping list. I do think this is the highest risk to human species.
Null and void used to have “bring out your dead” ping list. Used to warn us of emerging pandemics. Haven’t seen it active since covid.
Stoned maybe but get some spinal or brain tissue in your environment and BANG.
I remember using the same saw to cut antlers off a deer (brain tissue involved) that was used to cut main big joints. Granted that was self butchering deer. Now I look back with a bit of concern. Maybe I need to get stoned to not think about it.
Prion diseas will make Black Death look like a childhood cold spread. It really is that simple.
After COVID what do ya do for an encore?
I think that we also have to surrender our liberties and send our cash to the WHO. I'm afraid that it's already too late for Joe though. He is already in stage four of the disease
10 foot tall 1,000 zombies sure seems more frightening than your average run of the mill human zombies.
Killer deer zombie virus.
Something tells me there’s some damned deep-state pseudo ‘scientist’ out there just thinking about how to get NHS/NIAID to fund him/her/they/them to DEVELOP the disease so they could......[name some lame-assed excuse]
Fair point...Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
The false positive rate was 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Quarantine the sick. Protect the vulnerable. Hang the guilty. Free everyone else.
Too late.
The infected people are Democrats.

AI suggested 40,000 new possible chemical weapons in just six hours

potentially lethal molecules. Researchers put AI normally used to search for helpful drugs into a kind of “bad actor” mode to show how easily it could be abused at a biological arms control conference.
All the researchers had to do was tweak their methodology to seek out, rather than weed out toxicity. The AI came up with tens of thousands of new substances, some of which are similar to VX, the most potent nerve agent ever developed. Shaken, they published their findings this month in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence.
The bad news is people are getting a zombie virus.
The good news is that nobody can tell.
In other words, it's only an issue if you're already a zombie.
Re: 99 - there has been *decades* of research into TSE, with BSE and Scrapie leading the way.
I don’t find TSE truly terrifying as they are rare, and easy steps can be taken to reduce possible infection vectors to humans. I have raised sheep/goats for decades, and in the hundreds that I have raised none have ever died from scrapie and I know that because of a USDA program to submit the appropriate brain and lymphoid samples for postmortem analysis. No test ever yielded a PrP(Sc) positive result.
Additionally, the research is so advanced into scrapie for sheep that there is a live-animal blood test that can alert if a sheep has a genotype with susceptibility to PrP(Sc). Every one of the submitted samples has come back with having the scrapie resistant RR genotype at codon 171. This blood test has allowed producers to essentially make substantial progress in breeding out sheep that have a genetic susceptibility to PrP(Sc).
Does this mean a sheep could not become infected with atypical scrapie such as the Nor98 strain? No, but the USDA routine slaughter surveillance program samples tens of thousands of sheep per year in the US, so there is a very large data set over the decades. Atypical is very rare as research has indicated that is transmits poorly under natural conditions.
If a human is diagnosed with CJD there is an extensive intake that asks specific questions regarding if the person hunted, how many years, if in agriculture were they a cattle / sheep / goat producer, etc. With that intake, the hundreds of thousands of deer hunters and a cattle / sheep / goat producers provide a large data set with which to draw out potential infection of from TSE. Postmortem examination will definitively yield if a person was genetically susceptible to CJD.
I do not consider TSE even remotely close to a zombie apocalypse or species ending issue. There is simply no research that suggests that is possible, and with larger and larger data sets available, retrospective analysis is providing new insights into TSE going back decades.
Re: 102 - but that’s been the case for Scrapie and BSE. A deer dying in a field due to CWD that is rarely if ever frequented by humans is orders of magnitude less of a risk for possible exposure than humans working in feedlots, slaughterhouses, veterinary settings, etc. I’m aware of no research? that shows people in the latter groups dying from CJD at rates higher than the larger population.
People would be advised to place higher emphasis on eating right, getting regular exercise, reducing excessive alcohol intake, and reduce smoking.
If it is a Mad Cow type disease, then the organism that causes is called a prion. A weird and nasty organism.
CNS is central nervous system==brain, spine, etc.
Chronic wasting disease is nothing new. State Wildlife Deaprtments are usually monitoring where it’s breaking out & warn hunters. It’s sad when it goes through the deer herds in an area, just decimates them. HOWEVER, this article is ginning up the fear porn as so-called news outlets operate by: if it bleeds it leads, if it can possibly give a fright, we write.
