What are we usually missing from the ancient world? Wood! Fortunately, the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 preserved a lot of wooden objects- ranging from a bed and crib, to a table, bench, and shrine, and more! Usually, these items are not on display, but on the occasion of a new exhibit, we are now able to examine the world of carpentry through these objects of everyday life- and many other artifacts- rarely preserved from Antiquity. A truly unique collection of artwork from ancient Herculaneum.

Transcript · Introduction 0:00 · thanks to the eruption of aus herculanum 0:02 · is one of the best preserved cities in 0:04 · the ancient world and it has so much 0:07 · wooden furniture in wooden constructions 0:09 · preserved that you never see until now 0:13 · we're going to explore some of the most 0:14 · amazing wooden objects from herculanum 0:17 · and from the ancient Roman 0:20 · World pyroclastic flows from vvus 0:24 · covered herculanum as deep as 25 M 0:29 · covering the shoreline changing it 0:31 · forever and covering the city and due to 0:35 · this level of preservation we have a lot 0:38 · of wood on site visible we see 0:41 · staircases preserved in carbonized 0:46 · Wood we see the reconstructions of 0:49 · multiple stories and the restorers in 0:51 · the 30s and 40s actually preserved a lot 0:54 · of that wood in the upper decks here are 0:56 · some beams of wood for the overhangs in 0:59 · front of shops and doorways lentil still 1:01 · in carbonized wood this is what makes 1:04 · herculanum so special as you walk into 1:07 · spaces you can look up and often times 1:09 · see the blackened stubs of Timbers that 1:12 · once extended to sustain floors on the 1:15 · upper 1:17 · stories but from this 1:20 · location some incredibly well preserved 1:25 · pieces of furniture are on display now 1:29 · they're from her lanium but they're in 1:31 · portii a nice pleasant walk down the 1:34 · street and a magnificent Palace I want 1:38 · to take you and show you some of the 1:39 · most amazing things you've ever seen 1:41 · that come from the ancient world what's 1:44 · so extraordinary about this is wood is 1:46 · rarely preserved we need special 1:48 · conditions to preserve the wood but here 1:50 · is an example we're going to see some 1:52 · things that don't exist anywhere else in 1:54 · the world from the time when herculanum 1:58 · is destroyed by vu · Fabri 2:01 · first just a few words about the 2:02 · protagonists the unsung heroes of this 2:05 · story today the fabri the Carpenters and 2:09 · they had various associations colia we 2:13 · see first this image from a shop in 2:16 · Pompei and the second one is a marble 2:19 · relief from the association in charge of 2:23 · also taking care of the CT statue of 2:27 · Jupiter Opus Maximus on the capitaline 2:29 · hill we often times have these records 2:32 · in this case artistic depictions of the 2:35 · Carpenters but now we can see the 2:37 · handiwork of those Carpenters from these 2:40 · Works in herculanum we start off with · small boat 2:43 · this small boat found in the western baz 2:46 · of herculanum and there are two 2:49 · interesting features so well preserved 2:51 · this is the painted straight prow with 2:54 · the red paint still visible and this 2:57 · other object is the vertical winch which 3:01 · was used to pull boats ashore now we 3:04 · turn to an extraordinary element made in 3:06 · Wood found from the house of the relief 3:09 · of Telos and we can see the modern roof 3:12 · that covers the room where the original · Telephos relief wooden coffered ceiling (recently discovered) 3:15 · wooden roof was blown off into the sea 3:18 · by the eruption from 3:19 · Vesuvius from the excavation of 2009 and 3:23 · 2010 now we have a reconstruction of 3:26 · that wooden ceiling with vibrant colors 3:28 · and we see where the Reconstruction 3:30 · comes from this beautiful inlaid wooden 3:34 · coffered 3:35 · ceiling and we see some of those colors 3:38 · are still vibrant Egyptian blue and even 3:43 · red this was a great discovery and it's 3:47 · made of 3:48 · furwood it truly is something 3:51 · extraordinary recently discovered from 3:55 · herculanum here's a bed made of spruce · bed, table, crib, bench 3:58 · wood with a headboard it was found in a 4:01 · shop in the orientalis 2 insula room 4:06 · number 10 and it is something 4:08 · extraordinary to see 4:11 · handcrafted with some elements of inlaid 4:14 · wood think about how rare this is It's a 4:18 · true standout from 4:20 · herculanum here's another Rarity from 4:22 · herculanum made of white fur and 4:25 · Rosewood we have the small table and 4:28 · what is so amazing amazing about this 4:30 · level of preservation is that we can 4:32 · quite clearly see here the inario we're 4:35 · used to seeing opct inario in Marble now 4:40 · here we have it with variety of woods 4:43 · here's an object of wood that looks like 4:44 · it was made yesterday made of oak this 4:47 · is a crib for a baby and it's found in 4:51 · the house of Marcus pilus peneus 4:53 · grananas and what is so sad about the 4:57 · story is in the room with the crib that 4:59 · were found five adult skeletons and the 5:02 · remains of the skeleton of a baby so we 5:05 · can imagine that all those people were 5:06 · once huddled in this room with this baby 5:10 · the child's room and ultimately they all 5:12 · met their fate and this was excavated 5:15 · between the 26th and 28th in March 5:19 · 1940 here's a bench it looks like it 5:22 · could have been made today it was found 5:24 · on the decanus Maximus of 5:26 · herculanum now we take a look at this · Lararium shrines 5:29 · lurar 5:30 · Shrine made of wood with capitals of 5:33 · Luna marble painted red and it's made of 5:37 · fur and popler wood and we see how 5:40 · heavily carbonized the wood is and of 5:42 · course these have undergone years and 5:45 · years of restoration over the decades it 5:49 · was found in the house of the black room 5:52 · and we have a number of Idols that were 5:54 · worshiped on the left here we see a lar 5:57 · figure and on the right probably a 5:59 · genius of the house here's another 6:01 · stunning larium on top of a cabinet 6:04 · heavily restored at the base here this 6:06 · is found in the house of the wooden 6:10 · larium and what we have then is the 6:12 · coverage reconstructed but the items 6:14 · that were found in the archaeological 6:15 · site have been replaced inside like here 6:18 · in the larium the statuette of Hercules 6:21 · and a statuette of Isis Fortuna TK 6:23 · figure on the right this is something 6:26 · really to behold and to enjoy you have 6:29 · the left door still on its hinges and as 6:32 · we pivot up we'll be able to see some of 6:34 · the inlaid wood in the larian space This 6:38 · truly gives us an idea of the quality 6:42 · the craftsmanship available in the Roman 6:45 · World here we have two wooden figures 6:48 · the statuette of a male figure and on · Idols, wax tablet, coin purses 6:51 · the right a female figure they come from 6:54 · two different locations but together 6:56 · they probably both had religious 6:58 · associations 7:00 · here we have from herculanum a precious 7:03 · remain of the wax tablet so you would 7:05 · have inserted within this wooden 7:06 · framework a layer of wax and you would 7:09 · write into it with your stylus pen here 7:12 · we have a wooden box that was used as a 7:15 · wallet and it was inlaid with bronze and 7:19 · silver and there's the pile of coins 7:21 · that were found next to it this was 7:24 · found in the possession of a deceased 7:25 · person waiting on the shore of hercula 7:28 · waiting to flee 7:30 · he didn't make it this is his treasure 7:32 · in his hand that he took with him as he 7:34 · tried to escape here's another wallet 7:37 · made of wood better preserved from the 7:40 · house of the two atriums and here we 7:42 · have carbonized wood in bronze you can 7:44 · see the mechanism for sliding open the 7:46 · top that still works and you have a 7:49 · number of coins one of them dates the 7:51 · time of 7:52 · espion now let's travel next door to 7:54 · herculanum to the Villa of the propiety · Recent finds from the Villa of the Papiri (inlaid ivory); trunk 7:57 · famous for the carbonized propiety 7:58 · scroll 8:00 · here is a restoration of it excavations 8:02 · continued recently even in 2007 and 8:05 · that's where these were found beautiful 8:07 · remains of tables and tripods inlaid 8:11 · with Ivory so we can look at some of the 8:13 · details here's a dancing figure on top 8:16 · of a bucranium an ox skull with fillets 8:20 · so we have a lot of religious scenery 8:22 · here we have dionisis and a lot of 8:25 · disiac scenes This truly is 8:28 · extraordinary you see the layer of ivory 8:31 · on top of the skeletal framework in wood 8:35 · this is one of the great discoveries 8:37 · recently in the Villa of papy and here 8:40 · we have from the decom Manus Maximus a 8:44 · maple trunk with the hinges that still 8:47 · work back in herculanum you can go to 8:50 · many houses and still find a lot of 8:53 · artifacts made of carbonized wood it's 8:56 · always an adventure there's Nice font.
very nice find- love the design-
That ceiling restoration gets my virtual standing ovation.
I went to the Pompeii exhibit at the Reagan library several years ago. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend this exhibit. It is stunning how advanced these people actually were.
Yup- lots of great art and workmanship- good video
Sounds great. Looks like it was there 2018 or so.

I searched for it or something similar, and was reminded that the Chicago MSI had one for about a year, ended last month. Whoops.
