Toyota Tops Most Dependable Brands And Cars Survey, Chrysler Dead Last

The latest dependability study results from J.D. Power make for grim reading if you’re in the market for a new car. The longer-term reliability of two thirds of all brands has decreased, and industry-wide, drivers are experiencing 190 problems per 100 vehicles.

That’s 4 more problems per 100 vehicles than the study found 12 months ago. Worse still, the rate at which problems present themselves has increased. A year ago, 12 percent of people experienced an issue in the first 90 days to three years of ownership. Now, the rate is up to 17 percent.

It should be noted here that JD Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study collected feedback from 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. This study took place from August through November 2023.

Ordered my first Toyota in Dec '22 (a 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road with leather seets and tech package) and picked it up in Feb. '24.

What a FANTASTIC vehicle. The 2nd or 3rd week I owned it I was in Tennessee. Was offroading and got it up to its axles in mud. Turned on Crawl Mode and shifted into 4L. Got itself right out. Laughed my butt off afterwards.

Back in January I took it out in a heavy snowstorm with 10 inches on the ground and accumulating and went off-roading into a farm field. Had a blast with it!

Already know it's the best vehicle I'm ever going to own. My '96 Cherokee I6 4.0L High Output is a very close 2nd.

but buying a new Accord or Odyssey seems like a safe bet.

Run, do not walk away from the Accord 1.5L Turbo. Steaming pile of crap. Ex wife's 2007 Odyssey has over 340k on it and still runs like new (she says.) That 3.5 24v V6 is pretty bulletproof.

“I have had 5 Mazda’s and never one problem with any of them.”

I believe that Mazda is the most underrated automaker of all time. We had two Ford Ranger’s through the years, they are a Mazda truck with different trim. Both of them went well over 300k miles with very few problems. The 94 we had would still be on the road if it wasn’t totaled by a hit and run driver.

Scotty on YouTube does not like turbocharged engines. He likes Toyota number one, followed by Honda

I think the trend to putting in 4 cylinder turbocharged engines, instead of V6 is driven by the EPA Cafe Standards.

“Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards”

Who knows. A lot of course goes to Japan, but they probably spread it around into operating capital in the plants and other areas.

Toyotas are great. We’re going to get a Tacoma later on this year. I’m on my 2nd Honda CRV. Its a 2006 with 110,000 miles. Runs like dream and has never had a major repair. We change the oil, tires and brake pads.

Wow, I decided to look at the 2018 JD Power survey. (Year my car was made) The industry average that year was 142 problems per 100 cars. Now it’s 190.

Lexus and Toyota even though at or near the top on both years list have slipped considerably. Some things never change, Land Rover and Chrysler were at the bottom in 2018 as well.

I’m sure Electrification and all the Safety system bells and whistles inc. the info system display panels are causing this.

Honda/Acura have really fallen. Toyota always amazes.

That’s because you’ve replaced them fairly often.

“70% owned by Ford”

I do not believe that is accurate.

"That 3.5 24v V6 is pretty bulletproof."

I believe that's the same engine that's in my 2017 Accord Coupe. V6, 6-speed manual, most fun car I've ever owned.

I started buying used Toyotas in the 90’s when they smelled like fish when hot. Since 2000, I’ve had 5 new Toyota’s and knock wood, never had any of them back for anything but oil change, tire rotation, fluid changes, etc. No mechanical failures in 100’s of thousands of miles and 5 new vehicles. They are cheaper to buy, depreciate slower, cost less to own and resell readily. My two most recent new Toyotas were built in San Antonio with US labor and over 90% USA made content. A similarly equipped GMC Denali was >$30,000 more expensive than a Platinum Tunrda in 2017. Same story on my most recent ‘24 Sequoia.

It is the same V6. Honda hasn't made major changes in that engine (that I'm aware of ...) in quite some time. Rightly so, IMO. Don't mess with bulletproof.

My Ex's Odyssey is a 2007. We divorced in 2017. Until that point I made sure all the scheduled maintenance on it was done and used full synthetic oil in it since new and changed it every 5k miles. IMO doing these basic, simple things are the difference in longevity.

I call BS on this study . No way Honda is ranked # 20 .

If you've ever driven an Accord or CRV with the 1.5L Turbo with over 30k miles on it, you'd absolutely believe it.

Stay away from any Honda with that motor in it. There's a reason there's a metric ton of them on lots all over where I live as "Used" ... complete garbage of a motor.

Interesting that Buick ranks just below Toyota. For the record, the Envision is made in China and the Encore is assembled in South Korea. I won’t buy a car made in a China but I’m curious if anyone has had any experience with the Envision....
