EV's During EMP's Destruction of the US by Millions of Impossible to Extinguish Fires
self

Posted on 01/31/2024 12:32:01 PM PST by ChinaGotTheGoodsOnClinton

Here is a thought. What if China was able to ignite all their lithium-ion batteries at one time?

Having done a little preliminary checking, it is likely that charging EV's would likely ignite during an EMP attack.

Sort of like the “Leave the World Behind” scenario but much worse...

EV's have been in the news lately as have EMP's so what about both?

Any FREEPERS have any thoughts on the topic?

If there was a successful EMP attack, a bunch of burning EVs would be the least of our problem. Mass starvation would soon follow. Anarchy. The govt would have no ability to affect anything. There are some hardened military facilities. Those would be in trouble when the MREs ran out.

My two cents. Would an EMP be bad? Yes. Would things quit working? Well, it depends. And for most things, "quit working" means need to be turned back on. A few things, though, would be messed up for good.

Here's a video of testing EMP devices. The laptop was shut off by EMP, but was able to be powered back on. The iPhone wasn't phased at all. But some devices were messed up. (Of course, this was in part an advertising video to tell you that a competitor's product is destroyed by an EMP.)

But what if you want to go for a drive and virtue signal to other liberals that you're saving da Erf while you starve?

Yes. I was being hyperbolic. No one knows what would happen. I doubt that EVs will catch on fire.

I hope it takes out the Harley up the street though. With his drag pipes at 2AM.

I was at a UPS airport facility with a semi waiting to pull up to the dock when a bolt of lightning struck the building 50 feet from the truck and it wiped out the computer for the transmission but not the engine needed a new mother board.

They wouldn't even need an EMP. A simple STUXNET type virus could conceivably short out and ignite battery powered cars, laptops, power tools, and cell phones in homes across America in the middle of the night. This combined with an combined attack on our internet and telecommunications infrastructure to block emergency calls could lead to countless homes and businesses burning down. It would be like an incendiary aerial bombing campaign across the entire country. Something like this could nearly defeat us without a shot being fired.

I liken an EMP attack to Y2K. As a young programmer shortly before 2000 there were plenty that had to be fixed ahead of time. It wasn't going to launch nuclear weapons or make banks forget your mortgage debt or things like that. That stuff was hyperbole. But had the IT folks not done anything there would have been substantial interruptions like some overnight bank processes might have err'd while transmitting ACH data to each other. Errors like that could have significant impact for a couple of days until it was resolved.

That's what I see an EMP attack being like. Ironically, probably the most vulnerable devices to EMP attacks are the more traditional appliances that are hard-wired. Unlike modern more delicate devices that, even when plugged in, run on DC power and, therefore, have the DC power adapter acting as a buffer between the device and an EMP line attack (replace the power adapter for my laptop and I'm good).

Not to mention under Biden they have managed to get 10 divisions of Chinese special operators on the ground here in the Good Ol’ USA.

“Having done a little preliminary checking, it is likely that charging EV’s would likely ignite during an EMP attack.”

They would hardly ignite. Don’t know what you read, but it was either useless speculation or you didn’t understand it.

Yes I remember. I had to do some coding magic on a test system where I worked. Pretty easy really.

A lot of shysters suckered a lot of people with scare tactics though. A few months after Y2K there was a glut of gas powered generators for sale. Lol.

Most new cars and trucks would be rendered useless after an EMP pulse. Only those old point and condenser ignition systems and DC generator vehicles would run. Even newer diesel vehicles would be a huge brick in your driveway. Anything that is electronic without EMP hardening would go up in smoke.

Jumping into the wayback machine about what I learned about EMP’s several decades ago. The EMP causes destruction in electronics by essentially dumping more electricity into a circuit than it is designed to hold through ionization of the air. This is why old school electronics still work, but circuits and circuit boards fail. So, all the electronics in a car, whether it is gas or electric, would be subject to damage and possible failure. This would include smart keys and smart ignitions, all radios and navigation, and anything using a printed circuit board which could include automatic transmission controls (cars that can tune their performance with software). However, the core mechanics of the car should not be affected (spark plugs, mechanical gearing, etc). 30 years ago, a regular car would be OK. Now, even gas cars may not run in the event of an EMP (think back to COVID when the big 3 could not ship cars because they did not have chips).

But the question at hand is the battery, and the only possible ramifications on the battery are that it could discharge it (the old saw about EMPs was that a car would work but you would have to replace the battery). This is non-trivial in an electric car, so it would be dead, but it would not blow up. The other part would be that you would have to have a battery charger that was not dependent on a circuit board.

I should have said: “When the EMP strikes, your ICE automobile will not catch on fire - it won’t run either”

My apologies for misleading you, but thanks for the EV info.

Do EV scooters and bikes have a BMS?

I think it is overblown, too. If it worked, somebody would be using it.

But the OP’s suggestion of Chinese sabotage of the batteries is just as scary. And with Ford hiring Chinese military contractors for their battery plant, the potential for implanted sabotage devices or software is huge.

Remember that China would likely be the country doing the EMP and they are also the ones making the batteries, so could they be purposely making EVs susceptible to fires?

Of course not! We should trust the CCP!

Well that is good to know.

Since EVs can combust while charging without any EMP, maybe an EMP will make that less likely.

Whew. The CCP only has our best interests at heart in any future EMP attack.

When the EMP strikes, your car will not catch on fire - it won’t run either (unless it has old-school ignition/wiring), but that is another problem with its own solution.

An EMP will burn out an old style ignition coil reducing the car to a boat anchor.
