Tesla Recalls Almost 200,000 Vehicles Over ‘Software Instability’ That Could Cause Crash

Tesla, Inc. will recall almost 200,000 vehicles over a software issue affecting the rearview cameras which could lead to crashes, authorities said Tuesday.

Tesla informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Monday of the safety recall of 199,575 2023 Model S, X, and Y vehicles in which software instability could prevent the display of the rearview camera, the NHTSA acknowledged in a letter. “A rearview image that does not display while in reverse decreases the driver’s visibility and increases the risk of a crash,” the letter noted.

The vehicles affected were equipped with full self-driving computer 4.0 and ran a software release version 2023.44.30 through 2023.44.30.6 or 2023.44.100, according to the letter.

Tesla released an over-the-air software update for the affected vehicles at no cost to their owners, the NHTSA said in the letter. Tesla was expected to have notified all affected owners of the recall by March 22.

“[I]t is illegal for a manufacturer, to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect,” the NHTSA warned. “This prohibition does not apply once the motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment has been remedied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”

The number of warranty complaints about the problem, which Tesla began receiving in late Dec. 2023, stood at 82 as of Jan. 22, 10 days after Tesla decided to recall affected vehicles, CBS News reported.

Tesla also recalled more than two million vehicles in Dec. 2023 over a glitch in its Autopilot technology after the NHTSA investigated several automated driving systems (ADS)-related crashes, the CBS News report noted.

There were 52 ADS-related crashes in Aug. 2023, the month with the highest tally of such crashes in 2023, NHTSA data showed. There were only two such crashes in Dec. 2023, the month with the only single-digit crash tally in 2023, according to the data.

Chrysler/Dodge/RAM has this same problem with a rearview camera.

How did we ever survive before rear-view cameras in cars?

My Jeep has a rear view cam and I rarely use it.

So it’s a “recall” that doesn’t mean bringing your car in to fix, just over the air software update. About the rear camera view not displaying when backing up (not the first thing we think of when we see “crash” in the headline).

My 90s vehicles don’t have these kind of problems.

Had intermittent rear view camera issues on my ‘16 ram.
The problem is that the connection to the camera becomes lose after multiple tailgate opening/closing cycles.

Solution is lower the tailgate
Remove the panel inside the gate (about ten torx screws)
Remove connection to the camera
Add a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector
Reattach connection
Zip tie the connectors to the inner supports so it no longer flops around
Replace the panel
Close the tailgate
Fixed
No problems since.

Probably the same issue on cars.

Now getting the “driver door ajar” problem fixed on the ford SUV...THAT is a challenge!

Yep, many issues caused by loose connections. Given the amount of abuse vehicles get over the years driving on bumpy roads, hitting curbs etc, rattling over potholes and such, it’s amazing really that more issues don’t crop up more often. It’s amazing that more nuts and bolts don’t work their way apart- folks criticised (and rightfully so) the airplane industry because a bolt was loose and caused massive issue, but how many of us have checked the nuts and bolts of critical items on our vehicles to make sure they are all tight and sound?

So while this is technically a ‘recall’ I assume it is really just a remote software update push?

If so, the cost is nothing close to a traditional recall.

I have my issues with Tesla but they have the most flexible software in their vehicles than anyone.

My Rav4 has a rear cam and I hate the thing but they made the rear window so narrow it’s pretty much useless.

The main concern with backup cameras is a frozen frame, not a complete failure with a black picture. The safety case depends on exactly what is the concern.

Hmmm, not to defend Tesla, but somehow the great majority of us have managed to drive for decades without the “help” of ‘mandatory’ reverse cameras. Eff the feds and everything they stand for.

"... How did we ever survive before rear-view cameras in cars? ..."

.

My God, man! Many folks didn't!
Folks had to use their neck muscles and turn around and actually LOOK!

Are you trying to make believe that you don't remember all of the mass carnage?
I don't believe you.

Makes you wonder how they are going to do this without dealer network.
Might be an easy software update
