Israeli Defence Forces have discovered a kilometre-long, booby-trapped tunnel where Hamas is said to have kept about 20 hostages.
At the end of the tunnel were cramped cells where the captives were held – five narrow rooms behind metal bars.
Toilets, mattresses and even drawings by a child hostage freed in November were found, military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.
The military released photos from the underground labyrinth and said it brought in journalists to document the tunnel before it was destroyed.
The tunnel entrance, Mr Hagari said, was in the house of a Hamas member in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, where Israel has been focusing its fight in recent weeks.
'The soldiers entered the tunnel where they encountered terrorists, engaging in a battle that ended with the elimination of the terrorists,' he added.
It comes as the Hamas-run health ministry claimed that more than 25,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza since the start of the conflict.
America is pushing for more negotiations between Israel and Hamas after families of the hostages held in Gaza travelled to Washington with the Daily Mail to call for their release.
The US, Egypt and Qatar are pressuring both sides to thrash out terms and it is claimed Israel and Hamas are willing to engage in discussions in Cairo.
This comes after families of female hostages travelled to the US capital to push American politicians to work to free them.
They presented copies of a Daily Mail article about the hostages' nightmare to key leaders, including Senate leader Chuck Schumer, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Democrat whip Katherine Clark.

“...with children’s drawings left on the walls”
See, Hamas is not all bad. After all, they run daycare programs too!!!
(sincerely, the Neocons now telling Israel to suck it up and live with that bunch next door)
.
“...more than 25,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza...”
BS.
Show us the fresh graves, and/or bodies.
I thought that Israel was flooding the tunnels.
Tunnel from hell destroyed....
They likely have stopped flushing them. All the horror stories of salty soil must have restrained them.
“...more than 25,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza...”

Hey its a start!
There are no civilians - only past Hamas fighters, current fighters, and future fighters.
I thought that Israel was flooding the tunnels.

Some but too many are interconnected in major systems with multiple layers - so far over 650 km have been uncovered. Most tunnels are cleared, munitions removed, and blown up using some of the recovered munitions.
And the journalists are doing accurate, thorough and complete reporting, I am sure.
Genesis 12:3
“Hey its a start!”
I agree, but I want to verify those numbers, so I can celebrate and keep track. 1 or 2 million more to go...
There is no Hamas Health Ministery. Hamas is dead.
A 100kt nuke, 1000m in the ground would make a nice swimming pool for the mooj.
Israel neither confirms or denies it has nuclear weapons.
Besides, Gaza has some of the best beaches in the world.
It is infuriating that our own Nation is “telling Israel to suck it up and live with that bunch next door.”
What a disgrace, what an indictment, what a feeling of impotence that these duplicitous treasonous evil puppets can speak in our name.
Canada, France, Ireland and many other Countries are similarly indoctrinated, bought or brainwashed.
The world is in a perilous place and Israel is the canary in the coal mine. If their war is lost so are we in a very few years. An unthinkable future lies at our feet.
This story is like a new ‘Anne Frank’.
“Squalid”?
The article states ‘southern gaza’, meaning that these tunnels are legacy, i.e., not built recently, demonstrated by the intricate finishing depicted in the video/pics (including both the tiling and plumbing). The images portray a major investment in tunnel infrastructure.
It’s clear that they’re going to be finding tunnels for years, and not just in gaza.
