I won’t say that plants can’t communicate but in this experiment how did they conclude that the plants “smelled” something given off by the plants being attacked and not something given off by the caterpillars?
Next up, the “Kvetching Willow” tree.
Along with beef, chicken and fish, they should ban slaughtering plants for food. They all feel pain.
But to characterize these chemical interactions as "communication" is a bit of a stretch; saying the plants are "talking" is just plain fantasy.
In the 1970's I took part in experiments that seemed to indicate that two "sibling" plants (same species, from the same parent plant) somehow were "connected", such that cutting leaves from one of the plants caused the other plant, a foot or two away, to react.
Of course, these observations were described as "Crying in pain" and "Sympathetic reaction" and so forth. Those of us doing the work thought it was all pretty overblown.
Trees do communicate. Squirrels are the enemy of pine trees in that large squirrel populations eat most of the seeds that pines need to reproduce. Pine trees have evolved a method to deal with squirrels - namely starvation. Periodically all the pine trees in a forest will not produce cones causing a massive crop failure and a precipitous drop in the squirrel population. It’s thought that the trees synchronize the timing of this is root grafts that occur naturally when pines are in close proximity.

Regards,
So vegetarians will now have to stop eating plants.
Can they sense danger when a vegan or vegetarian is nearby?
Post 29-a picture of plants talking to each other.
LOL! I lost my Deep Thoughts books when we moved several years ago.
There was a sci-fi horror movie in the 1950’s in which alien plants that looked like daffodils were taking over the world by spraying poison gas from the flowers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. The writers of the movie Avatar didn’t come up with talking trees out of no where.
They’ve only recently found that mycelia/fungus in the soil, take minerals from rocks and sand and give it to plants through their roots. We now know that a tablespoon of healthy soil has millions of microbes.
Science should spend a lot more time trying to figure out how this God created, life supporting planet works and less time trying to play God with things like CRISPR Cas9 gene editing.
Too bad scientists are taught the Big Bang Theory early, as if it’s a known fact. We’d be a lot further along if scientists were Creationists.
Triffids...............
They were talking that they could do a better job than the potted plant in the White Hospice! They also asked about Trump’s Iowa’s win. 🤓
I still hear screams every time I slice into a fresh tomato....
This is now news? This was news sixty years ago when it was claimed plants had “feelings” and could talk to each other.

Of course they do! No doubt in my mind. I always talk to my houseplants and garden plants.
They don’t talk BACK, but they respond favorably. :)
Lol
