Roger Daltrey on the Who: 'That Part of My Life Is Over'

There are currently no future touring plans in place for the Who, and Roger Daltrey is content with that.

The singer recently spoke with The Times about the band’s status, explaining that he’d need to discuss whatever happens next with bandmate Pete Townshend. “I don’t write the songs. I never did,” Daltrey said. “We need to sit down and have a meeting, but at the moment I’m happy saying that part of my life is over.”

I’m thinking Roger is approaching 80…. So he may not want to tour again.

I saw them about a year ago at Madison Square Garden. They were backed by a full orchestra. The opening song was the Overture from Tommy, after a long instrumental opening the song lyrics start with "Captain Walker didn't come home..."

So when the vocal part rolls around, Daltrey is just standing there, exactly like Joe Biden after a speech. He looked like he had no idea what he was supposed to be doing. Just standing there like an old man looking for jello.

Simon Townshend, Pete's brother, starts singing the background bits, trying to jump start Roger, but it was a no go. They played the music for the rest of the song, then gathered around Roger. I honestly thought the show was over, like Roger was not mentally there.

After a few moments that started the next song, and Roger was fine for the rest of the night. His voice was solid and he remembered all the lyrics.

I expected Townshend to be shakey, not Roger. But Pete was on the money all night, vocally and on the guitar. After the early bump, the show was great the rest of the night.

Wow, that's definitely a senior moment thing that eventually awaits everyone who gets to that point. Good thing Daltrey had people around who truly cared for him - unlike a certain decrepit dirtbag who's basically amphetamined for public appearances for the sake of those using up what's left of his lifetime for their personal agenda.

No one likes to bring up the fact that Pete Townshend, brilliant as he is, is a convicted pedophile that his long-time musical partner may be disgusted with but has the class to not drag that up. Listen to Pete's song "Rough Boys" and you'll hear he revels in his perversion with no shame or regret at all.

So Roger has to be applauded for hanging in there for the fans for so long when he probably wanted to get away from the creep long ago.

They mainly got back together for John’s sake because of his debts.

I think after the response they got after the 9/11 Concert, they pretty much decided to keep on going, even after John’s demise.

“That’s a myth ; she died of a heart attack, no ham sandwiches were involved.”

Well, a whole lot of ham sandwiches over the years were likely involved.

“Fascism and rock are not compatible.”

It all started going bad when they started getting corporate sponsors. A lot of the free spirit and spontaneity was lost.
