Snow so heavy that it could bury the field. Temperatures so low that beer will freeze. These are just some of the conditions expected during "the worst weather we've ever seen on the opening weekend of the playoffs."
Extreme weather could crash multiple tailgating parties and football games as the playoffs get underway, including some of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the weekend.
"There is going to be some of the worst weather we've ever seen on the opening weekend of playoffs," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.
Coldest game in Miami, Kansas City history possible Saturday Arctic air will usher in bone-chilling conditions across the Plains ahead of Saturday night's game as Kansas City hosts Miami, and it could become historically cold. The coldest football game in Miami history was 10 degrees, set back in 2008, and the coldest game in Kansas City history was 0.5 degrees, back in 1983, according to CBS.
"Evening temperatures likely drop below zero, and AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will likely be in the negative teens throughout the entirety of the game," AccuWeather Meteorologist Mike Youman said.
It will be so cold that fans who purchase beverages, including beer, could have their drinks freeze solid due to the extreme temperatures.
Kansas City Superman Christopher Stone told AccuWeather how he has dealt with frigid games in the past and has a recommendation for folks braving the elements to cheer on their team.
“Bring a piece of cardboard or carpet to stand on," Stone said. "Because when you’re standing on that concrete, your feet will get so cold."
The coldest game in NFL history, aptly named the "Ice Bowl" was played in Green Bay on Dec. 31, 1967, an infamous matchup when the temperature was 13 degrees below zero.
Blizzard in Buffalo on Sunday? The first game slated for Sunday could face not just the worst weather of the weekend but the worst weather for any game this season, as bitterly cold air clashes with intense snowfall when Buffalo battles Pittsburgh.
"There's going to be a very narrow band of lake-effect snow. I think we have a real opportunity that this can come right into Orchard Park on Sunday, and if it does, you're going to be looking at 1-3 feet of snow," Rayno explained. Strong winds paired with the heavy snow could create whiteout conditions around Orchard Park, New York, on Sunday.
"In fact, it would be a blizzard with temperatures in the 20s, AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures below zero," Rayno added.
Pittsburgh fans are known for traveling far to cheer on their team during away games, and folks making the journey from Pennsylvania to New York could face travel-snarling snow.
"Give yourself an abundance of time to get from home to the stadium, and expect very slow-moving traffic as well as near zero visibility underneath the strongest lake-effect bands," Youman said. "Have an emergency kit with you in case roads close and you’re stuck in your car."
Rayno added that the NFL may even consider changing the time of the game due to the timing of the heavy lake-effect snow in Orchard Park.
And remember to charge your electric car battery before you start out.. :)
Yep - current forecast is for cold (15 degrees in AM) and up to 2.1 inches - hardly a blizzard for that area in January....
From personal experience at that stadium, you learn how to dress warm, and when 80,000 fans are celebrating a big play.... it’s easy to forget the weather.
Go Bills / Go Cowboys, some great games this weekend.
Yes, yes, the weather — but the most urgent question is will Taylor Swift be at the Chiefs game?

Dang that Global Warming.
Yes, dressed like a demented Eskimo!.........................
There will be ‘Global Warming’ in the end.
God said so...................The Earth will melt with fervent heat!..........
According to 2 Peter 3:10, the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, and both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
True, and I’m glad.
I bet NBC won’t get anywhere’s near the $110 Million they paid the NFL for this ONE GAME.
This will be the last time they do that................
I want a pineapple plantation................in Minnesota!............
Woohoo. Since my Steelers are clearly drastically weaker at QB I’m pro weather that negates good QBing. Also snow games are just fun... on TV.
In the age of domed stadiums, why these northern teams don’t build one is perplexing.
This might be a reason to watch the game.
But due to the 'Precession of the Poles' and some other minor factors, like Earth wobbling on its axis, eventually, after 26000 years or so, the Northern Hemisphere will be tilted towards the Sun when the Earth is closest to it, and away from the Sun when it's furthest from it.
Then the Ice Age will be here ... again, as it has for multiple times in Earth's geologic history.
“Earth’s orbit”?
I suppose you even believe that the Earth isn’t flat.
The Earth isn’t flat, but the Universe is..................
Yep - I grew up in Rochester - during Jan and Feb, I carried a snowmobile outfit in the car because my girlfriend lived out in the sticks - and with some of the country roads, getting stranded was a real possibility.
That’s where I’m originally from as well. Always packed supplies in the trunk in the winter, a good lake effect blast could turn a car ride into an adventure.
I grew up a few miles south of Buffalo on Lake Erie. The lake effect snow. So dangerous.
Later, I moved to Alaska. That was like a day at the beach compared to NY.
Some congressmen are already talking about reviewing the antitrust exemption the league has if more games, especially playoff games, are sent to streaming only.
They could try but they’d fail. Their anti-trust exemption is part of the Sports Broadcasting Act. And that came AFTER a Supreme Court ruling that ruled that because of the collective nature of sports they are allowed to make horizontal agreements pooling broadcasting rights. If they tried to remove it from 1 sport for 1 method of broadcast the NFL would take them to court and win.
