Gen Z grads are tanking job interviews, struggling to find full time positions

Recent college graduates are failing at job interviews, according to a new study.

Developmental setbacks from various factors have appeared to delay communication skills among Gen Z grads — and employers are taking notice.

In a Dec. 2023 study, the New Jersey-based research group Intelligent surveyed 800 U.S. managers, directors and executives who are involved in hiring. One in five employers reported that recent college grads are generally unprepared when it comes to interviewing for a job.

More than half of employers surveyed said Gen Z candidates struggle the most with eye contact during interviews.

Candidates in this age group also ask for unreasonable salaries and have dressed inappropriately for in-person interviews, according to about half of the study respondents.

Even virtual interviews have posed issues, with 21% of employers reporting that some candidates refuse to turn on their cameras for the interview.

The respondents reported that Gen Z candidates struggle to pick up professional cues, causing 39% of employers to favor hiring older candidates.

About 60% of employers said they are willing to offer more benefits and pay higher salaries to attract older workers rather than recent grads.

For that same reason, 48% of employers are offering remote or hybrid positions to older employees and 46% are willing to hire overqualified candidates, according to the new study.

There’s a notorious case of a community college grad who could not spell the school’s plain jane name.

Never fear, young grads! I hear Boeing is hiring door plug inspectors by the carload.

Glad I retired when I did. All the younger workers were lazy and called in sick all the time and most of management were sociopaths that got promoted because they were special interest groups that couldn’t be fired.

I had many issues with my father, but the old man DID instill a serious work ethic in me.

A young girl milked cows on a farm. There would be no need for a resume if there were ore of them.

I cut velvet with Hatry Fleming for 40 years. Dim lighting and cheap material. That’s how you move merchandise.

My wife and I had 3 children; all 3 finished 4 year college programs in 4 years, and none of them moved back in with us. Also 2 Masters degrees and 1 PHD in Material Sciences.

Looking back, it seems like the crowning achievement in child raising. Just not enough grandchildren for grandma, only 4.

I interviewed candidates for a position and had some of them show up in jeans, T-shirts and flip-flops. No kidding.

Was interviewing potential legal assistants 5 years ago. Every one of the Gen Z’ers used the “I’m a sponge” line - as in “I soak up all the learning you can give”. The problem is, none of them could wring out the learning from the sponge. One of them had a letter of recommendation from a professor saying what a hard worker she was. Notsomuch...

My wife and I have three kids. One is a cop, one is a nurse and the other had a baseball scholarship to college and hated it. He wanted to work as a butcher and is the manager of a meat department, he loves it. All are married except the butcher and live on their own. We had one, the cop move back home for three months when he was going through a divorce with his first wife, which was fortuitous for him as he was involved in a gunfight in his job and ended up having to kill a the man shooting at him and he would talk to me about the event, still does. Otherwise they pay their bills and live their lives. We are now into grandchildren phase, three grandsons.

My wife is trying to hire a controller position at her place of employment and one candidate failed to show period, asked for a re-interview via zoom and then failed to show for that, her “morning just got away from her...” then asked for another interview, which was met with silence from my wife.

She has ran this position three times and can’t find anyone qualified and the half-qualified want more money than she makes as the vice president of finance.

But since we don’t GAF, we are also unwilling to play corporate DEI game. We want to work responsibly and take responsibility for our work.

How much more evidence do we need that colleges are a total failure? They have nothing to do with education or life skills.

All colleges are for today is to put fools in debt and indoctrinate them, preparing them to only believe what they are told to believe.
