Weekly Garden Thread - January 6-12, 2024 [Garden Resolutions for 2024]
January 6, 2024 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 01/06/2024 6:43:23 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

“Another lifetime.”

Exactly, LOL! Imagine how James Bond felt at the end of his life, looking back! ;)

It’s ugly, here. Trying to decide if I should go shovel some, or see if the wind does it for me! Ugh! After the snow, DANGEROUSLY cold temps. Sub-Zero. Double-Ugh!

Today:

Very windy with snow, heavy at times; blowing/drifting snow is likely.. Snow accumulations of four to eight inches during the day are likely. Nearly steady temperatures in the lower 30s through the day Wind: E/NE 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH

Tonight:

Very windy, and cold with occasional snow, heavy at times during the evening; significant blowing and drifting, with difficult travel. Additional snow accumulations of two to four inches likely by morning. Wind: N/NW 20-30 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH.

Tomorrow:

Windy, colder, snow showers/flurries; significant blowing/drifting snow may make travel very difficult. Storm total snow accumulations of eight to twelve inches or more are likely. Temps falling through the teens Wind: W/NW 15-30 MPH

We are in the middle of 8-10 inches and winds could reach 50 mph. Not going anywhere. Local businesses and restaurants closed a couple of hours ago. Sigh, we are warm and comfortable.

Going out in a few to shovel for the FOURTH time in two days. Some drifting last night with winds from the north, but all in all not as bad as I thought it would be.

Now, we go into the DEEP FREEZE, which is worse. Not fit for man nor beast! Blech!

Diana, great pictures from your garden! (County Fair ready vegetables and photos that are publication quality!)

My mother had a christmas cactus just like that! (I wonder what happened to it...)

Number 2...A gardeners dream....your garden with a view across the fields to wooded groves and distant tree lines!

Number 12...5 ft tall fully loaded "magazines" of brussel sprounts...especially impressive! (

Number 15... A beautiful canning trophy table!

An Excellent gardeing year!

Qiviut, Wow! What an incredible view! I do not think you could ask for a much better situation.

A blessing! So glad you have found that house! Thanks for sharing!

(Off to do things including running the car for a while.)

15 inches so far now the deep freeze same as you and the lake effect snow machine kicks in snow each day for the next 4 days. Hubby plowed but we are not going out anywhere. TV Mass tomorrow from the diocese for us. I used what we had on hand to bake this amazing bread. I even had basil frozen in olive oil and our own dried tomatoes. It’s amazing, next time though about twice as many chopped tomatoes.

https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/sun-dried-tomato-provolone-bread/

I used kefir instead of buttermilk.
