From the article linked below:

“...“The majority of universities in the nation’s top athletic conferences lost money through their sports programs to the tune of approximately $16 million each.”
...”

https://www.bestcolleges.com/news/analysis/2020/11/20/do-college-sports-make-money/

2020 article but I doubt much has changed. If anything it’s likely worse. You can guarantee the loss is made up in some fashion by the taxpayer. Who probably thinks he’s paying for improved higher education!

Note I am a fan of the sport but not of institutional hypocrisy! What kind of lesson does that teach? There I go again thinking education is important!

“They knew who the weaker opponent was.”

Do they? If the reason for going with Tide rather than FSU is based upon sellability of their sponsors’ products, then that has nothing to do with the teams except appearance purposes.

LSU 9-3
Boston College 7-6
Clemson 9-4
Virginia Tech 7-6
Syracuse 6-7
Duke 8-5
Wake Forest 4-8
Pittsburg 3-9
Miami 7-6
Northern Alabama 3-8
Florida 5-7
Louisville 10-4

“Selecting fsu for the playoff would have effectively just meant giving Michigan a free pass in round 1.”

There is no such thing as a free pass in NCAA football. There are many situations that change the game like dropped passes, penalties, missed field goals, injuries... And who’s to say one or more of ‘Bama’s important position players don’t go down on their opening play? That’s all part of the game. One goes down for FSU and the whole scheme changes.

One of the things you look for in schedule is who they both played which in this case was LSU of which they both beat them. The AP rated FSU ahead of Alabama using the same criteria the selection committee used, supposedly, in their Dec 2 poll. Did they know who the weaker opponent is?

https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/football/fbs/associated-press

Put them on the field as unbeatens and see who wins. It may have been said best by Florida State coach Mike Norvell:

“What is the point of playing games?” he said.

And when a number of sports media like the AP and ESPN disagree because it is being done for money and not sport, them why call it a game and not a side show? The committee and P. T. Barnum had a lot in common. Both run a circus.

Kind of amazing to me that no one seems to directly blaming the optouts.

I blame the Fla State coaches; Georgia didn't seem to have a problem with optouts and were highly motivated (and I am NOT a UGA fan).

The Seminoles played without their top two quarterbacks, top two running backs, top two receivers, starting tight end, three starting defensive linemen, two of three starting linebackers and three starting defensive backs. They were down 29 scholarship players in all.

And apparently Georgia was missing 20+ of their players too. No excuse there.

Why are these students getting a scholarship if they're refusing to play because they're gonna go earn even more money? Revoke scholarships and drop that diploma hold on them! If they're scared of getting hurt, they shouldn't be going into a "career" like football...

Remember the Bama TX BCS Rose Bowl in 2009/10 when TX starting QB, Colt McCoy, was lost in the 1st few minutes of the game?

“Even if both teams were at full strength, I still think Georgia wins the game, with all the players out it was a mismatch.”

everyone conveniently ignores the fact that georgia STILL kicked the snot out of FSU even after georgia pulled out almost all of its starters and substituted their putative second and third best players, thus providing a more even matchup with the depleted FSU bench ...

“Go DAWGS... and they had 2nd and 3rd string players in the 2nd half.”

indeed ... and almost everyone commenting ignorantly here seems to conveniently ignore that fact ... even with 2nd and 3rd string players, thus providing parity with a depleted FSU bench, georgia STILL kicked the snot out of FSU ... having such a deep bench of talent bodes well for the Dawgs next year!

“Georgia beat the third stringers who didn’t really care after they didn’t make the playoffs.”

in the second half, georgia’s third stringers STILL beat the snot out of FSU’s third stringers!

I'm with Coach Kirby Smart and other people of common sense:

Georgia coach Kirby Smart calls for change after 60-point bowl win over Florida State: 'They need to fix this'

The current system in college athletics is unsustainable. Most people can see it. What's your excuse?

I wish FSU had been chosen for the BCS for the simple reason that they still would have played without the 22 starters and shown what a farce the BCS and the player portal really are.......

“The current system in college athletics is unsustainable. Most people can see it. What’s your excuse?”

The system is currently sustainable for schools that produce the most revenue.

Those schools that cannot produce the revenue to support their athletic programs, should not be playing sports.

As for the college athletes, I expect them to make decisions that is best for their financial future.

Eventually the big programs will break away and form their own league.

This is exactly what happened with soccer in England with the Premier League, which broke away from the FA, to get their own separate TV contract.

True, but when you have thoroughly defeated the other team, FSU had given up by then and the subs for Georgia were just glad to be in there and going all out versus the FSU players that just wanted the game over and go home.

“Eventually the big programs will break away and form their own league.”

Exactly!

A 12 team league with Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia, USC, Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Penn State, Auburn, and Oregon would be some great football and generate billions, for schools, networks and athletes.

And basically most of the schools outside will end up dropping football.

If the program does not produce revenue, then yes, the program should be dropped.

The playoff should be the best four teams in the country. Georgia is the two-time defending national champion. They lost to Alabama, in the SEC championship by only 3 points. Georgia was #1 in the polls almost the entire year. A 3-point loss to arguably the second best team in the country knocks them out of the top FOUR teams? That’s not reasonable. Look at what Georgia did to Florida State and to TCU earlier this year. They are a dominant program. Texas was beaten by Oklahoma. Oklahoma lost 2 regular season games and lost their bowl game. Oklahoma is goo, but not great. Texas barely beat Houston (a 3-3 team), beat Kansas State by 3 in overtime, and beat TCU (a 4-5 team) by 3. Texas is good, but they are not Georgia caliber.
