The Linux Foundation has released their 2023 Annual Report... and it is an absolute doozy.
The first big headline?
As of 2023, The Linux Foundation now spends just 2% -- that's two percent -- of their revenue on their namesake: The Linux Kernel.
"Ask yourself this: If there is a foundation named after a specific thing... what percentage of that foundation's revenue would you expect to be spent on said thing?
Let's say... "Save the Orange Trees Foundation". How much of their revenue should be spent on, you know, orange trees? 100%? 50%? 10%?
If "Save the Orange Trees" only spent 2% on "saving Orange Trees"... would you think that something was amis? Of course you would. And you would quickly wonder what non-Orange-Tree related things that foundation is funding.
With that in mind, let's look at Linux Foundaton funding of Linux... compared to their investments in "Blockchains" and "Artificial Intelligence".
“Other than the businesses who provide commercial support for Linux—RedHat, SUSE?, etc, who would even give this organization money?”
This is a very good question. And the answer is... Around the world there are huge rich projects such as CERN and even whole countries who base their computing technology on Linux. Almost all “smart home” technology and appliances are based on Linux.
So in appreciation they donate to the one organization who claims to represent Linux and promises to advance the improvement of Linux. The “Linux Foundation”. And this is why it is so frustrating to find out they have not cared about Linux for sometime now.
They are accepting donations for something they are not doing... This is fraud and misrepresentation by the very definition.
I haven't heard anything particularly good or useful about them. Sounds like a bunch of blood-suckers.
BTW, a 23-year-long die-hard Linux fan here. Got my first RedHat system on HP tower hardware (wow! one whole GB of RAMBUS RAM!) in 2001. Since then, RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, on everything from 80-core Xeon servers to a couple of Raspberry Pis.
I have no use for blood-sucking "foundations".
What is the CLI command or key shortcut for that my friend? :)
They forced out Linus Torvalds in 2018, using DEI and “woke” considerations to pressure the major donors. Torvalds’ daughter helped dump her father, because she was “woke”.
2%??
So, pretty much a typical “Foundation”.
Is this a case of saying "only X tiny percentage of a car company's spending is for the core engine features" which counts only the piston, cylinder and spark plug, but doesn't include fuel, suspension, computers, body, seating, steering, HVAC, windows, etc., etc.
Linux is junkware. If you want a good computer OS use MS and Apple products.
Yeah ... it’s pretty bad. If you have the stomach for it, try reading the entire Annual Report. These people have gone past left field ... they’ve climbed the stands, jumped off the back, and they’re in the parking lot racing for the “outer darkness” (where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth).
See #23 above.
“Linux is junkware. If you want a good computer OS use MS and Apple products.”
Both are based on different variants of Unix. Linux is full open source, iOs has elements of closed source along with the open source. So to claim Linux is junk is to claim the Unix base source of iOs is also junk.
The difference? I have complete control over mine you do not, just like with MS Apple will always own yours. Linux does not own mine. If I had a Mac I would have already replaced the OS with Linux.

Unix systems.
C-code to determine spaceloss over multiple distances. Easy, don’t have to load up some application to run it. type in “spaceloss” enter the distances and frequencies, get your answers.
C-code to determine great-circle azimuth and distance between two points for RF propagation.Type in “gc”, enter the endpoints and done. Don’t need to load up some spreadsheet to run the math.
C-code to test and evaluate multiple broadband receivers covering 1 to 18 GHz. Easy - set up the tests, menu for the tests, run it. That’s a specialized, expensive, and huge application otherwise.
Test sensitivity of another broadband receiver with the front end wide open - can’t shut off the incoming stuff from the antenna. Hint: Gate the test signal responses with $20 of hardware, then the c-code to do the rest.
Oh Yeah - Forgot. C-code for controlling and reading back multiple test equipment pieces. That, again, is specialized, expensive, and huge applications.
Microsoft base loads do not provide the tools to accomplish these functions.
Unix - Linux, the BSDs - provide these capabilities as part of the base load.
I know. I spent almost forty years doing this sort of work as part of my assigned duties.
Microsoft is simply not up to the task, along with having reliability problems. I have no experience with Apple products.
Just a final thought - QNX is a highly reliable Unix operating system. You run nuclear reactors with it. Turn it on, walk away for the next twenty years. Try THAT with Microsoft junk. Had to deal with it a few times. It is different, but still unix. Available to the public, don’t know the current cost.

Ummm...
No.
There is a reason Linux is preferred by so many web-server operations.
Since Microsoft merged the DOS (shell) layer with Windows graphical layer in Win95 to provide their ‘Active Desktop’ (that gave birth to the now eternal mshtml.dll), Windows threw away all pretense to security. Secure networking on Windows provides employment for, literally, millions of people. Not that THAT, in and of itself, is a bad thing - tech jobs are what they are - but there is that.
Can’t speak to Mac’s fitness.
⊲ Policies against all-male panels andspeaker lineups ⊲ pronoun stickers, all-gender restrooms, zen zones, ⊲ non-binary networking lunches, diversity lunches, and receptions that include Ally guest Wokeism virus detected. Self-destruction sequence initiated. Clean infection immediately.What is the CLI command or key shortcut for that my friend? :)
Run each in sequence in chosen programming language: Acts 14:15; Ezekiel 18:30; Romans 10:9; James 4:4-10; 2 Peter 1:2-10
The first 3 of above will result in a new OS, though the choice must be made to continue to run it and get ride of any infections (4th code), as well as to upgrade it (last code) I have yet to fully implement the last ones myself but seeking to.
“Since Microsoft merged the DOS (shell) layer with Windows graphical layer in Win95 to provide their ‘Active Desktop’”
Ummm...no. That version of Windows was deprecated when Windows NT (1994) was created from the ground up. Since you are confused by the name ‘Windows’ having been used by the DOS variant and Windows NT, you have no clue what you are saying.
You obviously don't have any exposure to what goes on on the backend side when you visit a website, or you wouldn't make such an ignorant statement.
Android on phones and tablets is also a codefork of Linux.
Equivalent of malware.

Almost all atheists are liberal.
83% says right or wrong depends upon the situation [though sometimes it does] but only 16% affirm there are clear standards for morality;
97% look to common sense, or science or philosophy/reason for moral guidance;
94% say homosexuality should be accepted;
92% favor homosexual marriage;
87% support abortion being legal in all or most cases;
78% are non-parents of children under 18;
10% ID as conservative; 15% are Republican.

It's a small but essential piece. Without it, you have some other Unix variant that isn't Linux. Most of the rest of the contents of a Linux distribution is not hard-wired to run on Linux, but is compatible with other Unix variants as well.
Are the AI and blockchain spending to improve the non-kernel parts of the operating system? A lot of speech recognition might count under AI. Similarly, secure communications and installation packaging might be under the block chain spending.
I'm not aware of anything in a mainstream Linux distribution that comes from the Linux Foundation. As I said, they're basically an education/training org. They may sponsor/fund somebody's SW development, but they don't develop anything of significance themselves AFAIK.
