The lawsuit alleges the dentist provided an unsafe dosage of anesthesia and falsified medical records to cover it up.
A patient is suing her Eden Prairie dentist after he performed eight dental crowns, four root canals and 20 fillings in a single visit, according to a newly-filed malpractice lawsuit.
Kathleen Wilson of Minneapolis says she received negligent treatment from Dr. Kevin Molldrem, of Molldrem Family Dentistry, in July 2020, that caused significant injuries. Her civil action, filed ahead of the holiday weekend in Hennepin County District Court, accuses Molldrem of grossly exceeding the safe dosage of anesthesia and falsifying medical records to show he didn't give Wilson an unsafe dosage.
It includes a scathing expert opinion from a Florida dentist contending that so much dental work in a single visit is "impossible to achieve if … done properly."
Molldrem did not respond to messages seeking a response to the accusations. He was served a summons in person at his office at 800 Prairie Center Drive on Dec. 20. Wilson's attorney, Nathaniel Weimer with the Minneapolis personal injury law firm Tewksbury & Kerfeld, also didn't respond to requests for comment.

I'm no dentist but as a patient I know I would never sign up to let a dentist do all that to me in one shot. However, that said, all this 'expert' tells me is that he himself wouldn't be able to do it well. I think testimony from a doctor who actually saw the work and weighed in on the qualty would be more interesting than some 'expert' who is just blathering.
In case you haven't noticed, I'm sick of being manipulated by anonymous 'experts' who are dug up to mouth the opinion of a lawyer or a politician or a reporter as part of their Argument from Authority fallacy.
My last root canal and crown took 3 visits in total...had to first get a temporary crown. The amount of work done to this patient in one visit doesn’t ring true.
Wouldn’t it be easier to just knock them all out?

Did the “dentist” do the actual work? Or is it just a billing scam?

This certainly would not be the first time this dentist did this. Were there no Yelp or Google reviews? No formal complaints to the licensing board?
I think the most I’ve ever had done at once is one crown prep and one filling or maybe two fillings. Nobody has ever proposed more.
That poor patient, in addition to all that shoddy work probably has ruined TMJ joint, muscles and tendons. I suffer from TMJ maladies and it is horrible.
I have found a conservative dentist - if it works, and doesn’t hurt, leave it alone.
Sometimes his patients move and go to a new dentist. Sometimes the new dentist says they need $10,000 of work. They call my dentist, and tell him what the new dentist recommended. He looks at the X-rays he has on file. Usually, he tells them to find a different dentist, preferably one who is not out to maximize revenue.

That should be enough, right there. Probably cost him his license.
When I was working in the UK, the only local dentist killed 3 people with the improper use of anesthesia in 5 years. The third one finally cost him his anesthesia license. Unbelievably, it did not cause him jail time, or even his general dentistry license.
I am having a very hard time believing this guy could possibly do all this work in a single sitting. I do know that dentists that advertise so-called sleep dentistry do so with the selling point being 'if your afraid of dentistry we can put you under and correct years of dental problems in a single visit' so I have to assume they routinely do a lot more work at one time then regular dentists do. This much though? I mean, yikes!
Amen. My dentist is mostly like that but I will say that a month ago he told me I had a tooth (that didn't hurt) that he had to put a crown on because it had too many fillings and they were losing their stability. He said the tooth might break. so I accepted it and the tooth was ground down and a crown put on. It now hurts A LOT whenever I chew on it. I think now that he 'saved the tooth' it will have to be pulled. Thanks doc.

In 1969 right before I got shipped out overseas a newly christened dentist started in on my teeth and filled in every frigging crease in all the upper molars of my teeth. He said, “You’re going to Viet Nam where you won’t be getting any dental care and I want to nip these potential cavities in the bud.”
Took all day and then he said, “Come back in a week and I’ll get the lowers, too.” I never went back. All these years later, the uppers cracked, fillings fell out, teeth pretty much ruined. The lowers? Just fine. I’d love to be able to sue him today. The best that I can hope for now is that his miserable ass is dead now.
I’m wondering if this went through his insurance and how is it the insurance company didn’t question this bill?
Years ago, 60 Minutes sent a person with no cavities to a bunch of dentists. Some were honest, while others found up to 4 cavities.
I would say the DMD called as a witness is more than just blathering. It would appear he has been called as an expert witness before.
