A Vancouver electric-car owner was shocked to learn earlier this fall that seemingly minor damage to his car’s battery required replacement of the unit and was quoted a $60,000 repair bill — more than the list price for a new car.
The owner was told the damage voided his warranty on the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, forcing him to file a claim with ICBC, which simply wrote the car off due to the extraordinary cost.
Automotive journalists Zack and Andrea Spencer chronicled the case on their Motormouth YouTube channel and said the case raises big questions for EV manufacturers around replacement costs and repairability of batteries as Ottawa introduces new rules to speed up EV adoption.
“The story is, people are buying these cars not knowing what the actual cost of the most important component of the car is to replace,” Zack Spencer said.
In this case, the Ioniq 5’s battery cover plate on the bottom of the car was scratched and showed a small deformation, which indicated the battery had suffered an impact.
Andrea Spencer added that it poses a problem for the whole industry if manufacturers can’t bring battery costs down, because “we cannot be writing off electric vehicles because the battery is damaged and the price is much too high to repair the vehicle.”
“This is a wake-up call and it really is big news,” Andrea said.

What model car?
Unexpected.
No one saw this coming.
No one.
my car insurance rate went up 100% and some... i have a feeling it’s the EV subsidies...
my 2008 F150 cannot be the reason.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5
I remember when Hyundi first came out. The cost to repair a 15 MPH crash was greater than the cost of a new car.
“The owner was told the damage voided his warranty on the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, forcing him to file a claim with ICBC, which simply wrote the car off due to the extraordinary cost.”
Electric SUV with the battery pack underneath and without a skid plate. Hmmm, it’s a real puzzler what happened there.
Anybody who has exercised even the smallest amount of due diligence would not even consider buying an EV, under any circumstance. The negatives are far too great when compared to any positives with these “vehicles”. Low travel range under ideal weather conditions. Tires that must be replace more often than on a gas/diesel powered vehicle due to the increased weight. The list goes on.
Pot Hole? Speed Bump?
Sorry, I have no sympathy for the owner, zero. He’s getting what he paid for similar to what the lefties are getting for what they voted for. They all can suffer amongst themselves all they want. Boo Hoo!!
Once insurance companies begin to price insurance for EVs to reflect these kind of losses, the market for EVs will die, unless they can redesign them to be more easily repaired.
Why do the batteries need to be assembled into a single large pack? Why not break it up into multiple smaller packs , interconnected, and easily replaceable, which allows a single or multiple packs to fail while still maintaining the operability of the vehicle?
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
The car ran over a piece of lumber.
This EV promotion guy in British Columbia did a video about this situation.

Ha-Ha
A Vancouver electric-car owner was shocked at the cost of batteries.
Wait until these EVs start burning down the garage/house that they are parked in at night. Wait until there is a WRONGFUL DEATH lawsuit against the manufacturer. The insurance on EVs will become cost prohibitive.
CA is requiring all EVs in ten years. Just look at their virtue.
electric-car owner was shocked
Well played.
“Wait until these EVs start burning down the garage/house that they are parked in at night”
That’s BEEN happening my friend.
This happened in my town not too long ago.
