Astronomy Picture of the Day - IC 443: The Jellyfish Nebula

Explanation: Why is this jellyfish swimming in a sea of stars? Drifting near bright star Eta Geminorum, seen at the right, the Jellyfish Nebula extends its tentacles from the bright arcing ridge of emission left of center. In fact, the cosmic jellyfish is part of bubble-shaped supernova remnant IC 443, the expanding debris cloud from a massive star that exploded. Light from the explosion first reached planet Earth over 30,000 years ago. Like its cousin in astronomical waters, the Crab Nebula supernova remnant IC 443 is known to harbor a neutron star -- the remnant of the collapsed stellar core. The Jellyfish Nebula is about 5,000 light-years away. At that distance, the featured image would span about 140 light-years across.

The Jellyfish Nebula.
That would make a great name for a large group of singers and musicians. The new Depeche Mode.

It may be silly, but based on those two pics, it’s a movie I would avoid. It reminds me of a certain episode on either Outer Space or Twilight Zone, where some cave explorers were chased, then attacked by bees, twice as big as Murder Hornets, but made of reflective metal. I (privately) thought about that episode for years. Those bugs had human faces and could talk.

It was scary in 1958.

Now it’s silly stop-action animation, like clay-mation used for the Christmas movies Rudolph and the like............

The claymation used for Rudolf and others was one of my favorite Christmas Specials to watch every year.
Very well done. I think actor Burl Ives voiced Santa.
