During the "Little Ice Age", the Thames River in London used to freeze up, allowing for ice-skating and other ice related activities.

I recently saw a joke to the effect that a Hallmark movie cannot be set in the South because unexpected snow is terrifying, and it always ends up with a fight at the Piggly Wiggly. Sounds about right.

Very few comic strips featured snow regularly, but two of the all time greats, “Peanuts” and “Calvin & Hobbes” made it central, with Peanuts emphasizing the Christmas linkage. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz grew up in Minnesota, which is a great location to be guaranteed a white Christmas. Calvin creator Bill Watterson grew up in Ohio, near Lake Eriw, so he saw lots of snow growing up, as well.

Interesting. The idea of a white Christmas has even creeped into songs about the Nativity itself; for example, “In the Bleak Mid-Winter.”

It’s supposed to be in the fifties on Christmas here in northern Indiana, and that suits me fine.

Christmas tales and carols have long since invoked images of silver bells...

'Evoked'.

nearly half of the contiguous U.S. historically has had a 50% chance or less of actually seeing a white Christmas.

Wow! It probably won't snow in the South at Christmas. What an analysis!

Here in Central Kentucky, it usually snows a little around Thanksgiving, but does not snow at Christmas. It waits for about Jan. 10 for bigger snows.

The author: Adriana Navarro “Adriana Navarro is a digital journalist at AccuWeather and has covered beats from breaking news to weather retrospectives. Her primary focus and interests are in disaster equity and intersectional climate solutions.

In other words, your Christmas celebration is a lie and has no meaning.

The Little Ice Age was a period of unusual cold weather in the Northern Hemisphere that spanned from the early-14th century through the mid-19th century (1300 through 1850)

Cold weather over more than five centuries doesn't sound all that unusual to me.

Songs like “Jingle Bells,” “Winter Wonderland,” Frosty the Snow Man” and “Sleigh Ride,” none of which mention Christmas, are probably popular around Christmas because it comes at the start of snow season. In the snowbelt, no one feels like singing those songs in February and March.

An ancestor of ours was Ives of Currier and Ives. My sister has one of their originals which isn’t scenic, but of children. It hung in Grandpa’s farmhouse.

Looks like here in Southeast Alaska we’re going to have a “Wet” Christmas. Lots of rain. No snow worth mentioning yet and none in the forecast.

Because it happens in winter in the US and winter is cold.

Next silly question from the nitwits?

Interesting piece, thanks for posting!

I’m surprised our gentle author doesn’t tell of how Irving Berlin was inspired to write “White Christmas” whilst sitting by a swimming pool in Los Angeles (something like that). I think if you hear a rendition that includes the intro that info is provided, but don’t have time to look.

I also remember hearing that “Sleigh ride” was composed in beastly hot weather during summer in New York.

So two of the popular classic tunes are truly based on longing for the refreshingly cold weather!

Merry Christmas FRiends!
